Translation
✧ ʿAlī ؓ fighting the polytheists at Uḥud. Ibn Hishām said: Maslamah b. ʿAlqamah al-Māzinī related to me, saying: When the fighting grew intense on the day of Uḥud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat beneath the banner of the Anṣār, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, ؓ: “Advance the banner.” So ʿAlī advanced and said: “I am Abū al-Fuṣam”—or Abū al-Quṣam, as Ibn Hishām said. Then Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah, who was the bearer of the polytheists’ standard, called out to him: “Do you have any desire, O Abā al-Quṣam, for single combat?” He said: “Yes.” So the two came out between the two lines and exchanged two blows. ʿAlī struck him and threw him down, then turned away from him without finishing him off. His companions said to him: “Should you not have finished him off?” He said: “He faced me with his private parts, so kinship turned me away from him, and I knew that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had killed him.” It is also said that Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah came out between the two lines and called out: “I am a breaker! Who will come out for single combat?” But no one came out to him. Then he said: “O companions of Muḥammad, you claim that your slain are in Paradise and our slain are in the Fire. You lie, by al-Lāt! If you truly knew that, some of you would have come out to me.” So ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib came out to him, and they exchanged two blows. ʿAlī struck him and killed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ killed Abū Saʿd b. Abī Ṭalḥah. Abū ʿUbaydah and al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: Regarding ʿAlī’s killing of Ṭalḥah, al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ—with kasrah on the undotted ʿayn, a light lām, and ending with an undotted ṭāʾ—al-Sulamī said: For Allah’s sake, what a defender of the sacred! I mean the son of Fāṭimah, the ennobled and munificent. Your two hands were generous to them with a swift thrust That left Ṭulayḥah stretched upon his brow. And you pressed with the press of a bold warrior and scattered them In the charge, as they fell in droves upon droves. And you watered your sword with blood, nor would you Turn it back thirsty until it drank its fill. Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge related to me that Ibn Abī Najīḥ said: A caller called out on the day of Uḥud: There is no sword but Dhū al-Faqār, and no youth but ʿAlī.
