The Detachment of Muḥammad b. Maslama ᴿᴬ against the Jew Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf
Translation
✧ Muḥammad b. ʿUmar ؓ said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Ḥassān b. Thābit and informed him of Kaʿb's alighting upon those with whom he had alighted; so Ḥassān said: Will you not convey from me to Usayd a message, for your maternal uncle is a slave, tried with wine. By your life, Usayd did not keep faith with his neighbor, nor Khālid, nor the son of al-Mufāḍah Zaynab. And ʿAttāb is a slave who does not fulfill a pact, a liar, disheveled of head, a trained monkey. It was related from ʿUrwah that Quraysh said to Kaʿb: "Is our religion more guided or the religion of Muḥammad?" He said: "Yours." When his satire reached her, she cast off his saddle and said: "What have we to do with this Jew?! Do you not see what Ḥassān is doing to us?" So he moved away, and every time he moved to a people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned Ḥassān and said: "The son of al-Ashraf has alighted upon so-and-so." He would not cease satirizing them until she cast off his saddle. When he found no refuge, he came to Madinah.
