Translation

✧ Kaʿb said, weeping for the companions of the well of Badr: Badr's mill ground for the destruction of its people, and for the like of Badr it pours down tears and weeps. The nobles of men were slain around their pools; do not perish, for kings are brought down. How many a fair, glorious one were struck down by it, of radiant face to whom the destitute repaired, open-handed when the stars withheld, a bearer of burdens who rules and is obeyed. And people say, whose displeasure I rejoice at, 'The son of al-Ashraf has remained Kaʿb grieving.' They have spoken truly; would that the earth, at the hour they were slain, had sunk down with its people and split apart. May the one who brought the report by his thrusting become blind, or live out his life blind, trembling, not hearing. I have been told that the Banū al-Mughīra, all of them, submitted to the killing of Abū al-Ḥakīm and were mutilated, and the two sons of Rabīʿa with him and Munabbih—none attained the like of the destroyers and Tubbaʿ. I have been told that al-Ḥārith b. Hishām among them is building good works among the people and gathering to visit Yathrib with hosts; for the noble, awe-inspiring one protects his lineage. Ḥassān b. Thābit replied to Kaʿb. Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī answered him, saying: Did he weep for Kaʿb, then was seized by a tear from him, and lived mutilated, not hearing? Indeed I saw at the bottom of Badr among them slain ones for whom eyes flow and weep. So weep, for you have made a suckling slave weep, like a little dog following a little bitch. Indeed the Merciful has healed us of a chief and humiliated a people who fought him and were brought low. And he escaped and slipped away from them, he whose heart is pierced, remaining split apart from fear of him. Ibn Hishām said: Most of the people of knowledge of poetry deny these verses as Ḥassān's. And his saying 'did he weep for Kaʿb' is reported from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Maymūna bt. ʿAbd Allāh replied to Kaʿb, and he replied to her. [Maymūna's poetry in reply to Kaʿb] Ibn Isḥāq said: A Muslim woman from the Banū Murayd, a clan of Balī, who were allies among the Banū Umayya b. Zayd—they are called al-Jaʿādira—answered Kaʿb. Ibn Isḥāq said: Her name was Maymūna bt. ʿAbd Allāh, and most of the people of knowledge of poetry deny these verses as hers, and deny her rejoinder to Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf: This slave yearns with every yearning, weeping over slain ones, yet not exerting himself. The eye of him who weeps for Badr and its people wept, and Luʾayy b. Ghālib was seized by the like of it. Would that those who were smeared with their blood might be seen, as they are, by him who was among al-Akhāshib, so that he might know truly, with certainty, and they might see their dragging over the beards and the eyebrows. [Kaʿb's poetry in reply to Maymūna] Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf answered her, saying: Now restrain from among yourselves a fool, that you may be safe from speech that comes from him not near the mark. Do you revile me because I weep with a tear for a people whose love came to me not falsely? I shall indeed weep as long as I live and remember the glorious deeds of a people whose glory is at the banqueting places. By my life, Murayd were in a place apart from evil, so they devised the faces of foxes. It is right for Murayd that their noses be cut off for their reviling the modest one of Luʾayy b. Ghālib. I have granted my share of Murayd to Jaʿdar in fulfillment, by the House of God, between al-Akhāshib.
