The Detachment of Muḥammad b. Maslama ᴿᴬ against the Jew Kaʿb b. al-Ashraf
قَالَ مُوسَى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: وَقَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَجَعَلَ يُعْلِنُ بِالْعَدَاوَةِ وَيُحَرِّضُ النَّاسَ عَلَى الْحَرْبِ، وَلَمْ يَخْرُجْ مِنْ مَكَّةَ حَتَّى أَجْمَعَ أَمْرَهُمْ عَلَى قِتَالِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَجَعَلَ يُشَبِّبُ بِأُمِّ الْفَضْلِ بِنْتِ الْحَارِثِ وَبِغَيْرِهَا مِنْ نِسَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ حَتَّى أَذَاهُمْ. وَرَوَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْخُرَاسَانِيُّ فِي فَوَائِدِهِ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ أَنَّ كَعْبًا صَنَعَ طَعَامًا وَوَاطَأَ جَمَاعَةً مِنَ الْيَهُودِ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ إِلَى وَلِيمَةٍ، فَإِذَا حَضَرَ فَتَكُوا بِهِ. ثُمَّ دَعَاهُ فَجَاءَ وَمَعَهُ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِهِ. فَأَعْلَمَهُ جِبْرَئِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ بِمَا أَضْمَرُوهُ، فَرَجَعَ، فَلَمَّا فَقَدُوهُ تَفَرَّقُوا. انْتَهَى. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي ابْنَ الْأَشْرَفِ بِمَا شِئْتَ فِي إِعْلَانِهِ الشَّرَّ».
Translation
✧ Mūsā and Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: He came to Madinah and began to openly declare enmity and incite the people to war. He did not leave Makkah until they had unanimously resolved to fight the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He began to compose love poetry about Umm al-Faḍl bt. al-Ḥārith and other women of the Muslims until he caused them harm. ʿAbd Allāh b. Isḥāq al-Khurāsānī narrated in his Fawāʾid from ʿIkrimah that Kaʿb prepared food and conspired with a group of Jews to invite the Prophet ﷺ to a banquet, so that when he came, they would assassinate him. Then he invited him, and he came with some of his companions. Gabriel ﷺ informed him of what they had concealed, so he returned. When they missed him, they dispersed. End. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O Allah, suffice me against Ibn al-Ashraf in whatever way You will regarding his open declaration of evil.”
