The Detachment of Zayd b. Ḥāritha to al-Qarada
فَبَلَغَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمْرُهُمْ، فَأَرْسَلَ زَيْدَ بْنَ حَارِثَةَ فِي مِائَةِ رَاكِبٍ، فَاعْتَرَضُوا لَهَا بِالْقَرْدَةِ، فَأَصَابُوا الْعِيرَ، وَأَفْلَتَ أَعْيَانُ الْقَوْمِ، وَأَسَرُوا رَجُلَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً، وَقَدِمُوا بِالْعِيرِ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَمَّسَهَا، فَبَلَغَ الْخُمْسُ قِيمَةَ عِشْرِينَ أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ، وَقَسَّمَ الْبَاقِيَ عَلَى أَهْلِ السَّرِيَّةِ. وَكَانَ فِي الْأُسَارَى فُرَاتُ بْنُ حَيَّانٍ، وَكَانَ أُسِرَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، فَأَفْلَتَ عَلَى قَدَمَيْهِ، فَكَانَ النَّاسُ عَلَيْهِ أَحْنَقَ شَيْءٍ. وَكَانَ الَّذِي بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَسَنًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: «أَمَا آنَ لَكَ أَنَّ تُقْصِرَ ؟ قَالَ: «إِنْ أَفْلَتُّ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ هَذِهِ الْمَرَّةَ لَمْ أُفْلِتْ أَبَدًا». فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ: «فَأَسْلِمْ». فَأَتَى بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ؛ فَأَسْلَمَ، فَتَرَكَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ.
Translation
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of their affair, so he sent Zayd b. Ḥāritha with one hundred riders. They intercepted it at al-Qarada and seized the caravan, while the prominent men of the people escaped. They took two or three men captive, and they brought the caravan to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He took a fifth of it; the fifth amounted to the value of twenty thousand dirhams, and he divided the remainder among the members of the detachment. Among the captives was Furāt b. Ḥayyān. He had been taken captive on the day of Badr, but escaped on foot, and the people bore the greatest anger toward him. His relations with Abū Bakr were good, so Abū Bakr said to him: “Is it not time for you to stop?” He said: “If I escape from Muḥammad this time, I shall never escape again.” Abū Bakr ؓ said to him: “Then become a Muslim.” He was brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and embraced Islam, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ let him go.
