Translation
✧ Its reason was that when the battle of Badr occurred, Quraysh feared their route which they used to travel to Syria, so they took the route of Iraq. Some merchants of theirs went out, among them Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb, and with him was a great deal of silver, which was the bulk of their merchandise. Ṣafwān b. Umayya went out with much wealth: ingots of silver and silver vessels weighing thirty thousand dirhams. Abū Zamʿa sent with him three hundred mithqāls of gold and ingots of silver, and men of Quraysh sent goods with him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿa and Ḥuwayṭib b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā went out with him among men of Quraysh. They hired Furāt b. Ḥayyān. Ibn Isḥāq said: of the Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, Ibn Saʿd, and Ibn Hishām said: of the Banū ʿIjl, and Ibn Hishām added: an ally of the Banū Sahm. He set out with them on the route of Dhāt ʿIrq. Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd had come to Madinah with news of this caravan, while he was still on the religion of his people. He met with Kināna b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq among the Banū al-Naḍīr, and with them was Sulayṭ b. al-Nuʿmān, who had become a Muslim. They drank, and that was before wine was forbidden. Nuʿaym b. Masʿūd spoke of the affair of the caravan and the departure of Ṣafwān b. Umayya in it, and the wealth with him. Sulayṭ went out at once and informed the Messenger of God ﷺ.
