Translation
✧ [ The Poetry of Abū Sufyān concerning It ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb said upon his departure, because of what Sallām b. Mishkam did to him: And indeed I chose al-Madīnah by myself alone for a pact, and I did not regret nor did I linger He gave me drink and quenched my thirst with dark-red wine in haste on my part, Sallām b. Mishkam And when the army turned away I said, and I was not one to make him rejoice: Rejoice in might and spoils Contemplate, for the people were glad, and indeed they are the pure stock of Luʾayy, not the scattered remnants of Jurhum And it was only part of a night of a rider who came hastening without the need of a destitute man And Abū Sufyān said in Makkah, while he was preparing: Turn again upon Yathrib and their gathered host, for what they gathered is spoil for you. If the day of al-Qalīb was theirs, then what comes after it is but turns for you. I swore I will not approach women, nor shall water touch my head or my skin, until you destroy the tribes of al-Aws and al-Khazraj; verily the heart is aflame. And Kaʿb b. Mālik answered him with his saying: O grief of the mother of the glorifiers over the army of Ibn Ḥarb at al-Ḥarrah, the failed one, when they cast down the men; whoever tired of the birds climbed to the peak of the mountain. They came with a host whose resting-place, if measured, was nothing but like the nest of the little fox, devoid of victory and of wealth and of the heroes of the people of al-Baṭḥāʾ and of the spears.
