The Expedition of Banū Sulaym (the Expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr)

Translation

✧ It had reached the Prophet ﷺ that Banū Sulaym had gathered at a water source of theirs called al-Kudr. So he appointed over Madinah Sibāʿ b. ʿUrfuṭah al-Ghifārī or Ibn Umm Maktūm, and ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib carried his banner, which was white, and he marched toward them until he reached the place of safety of their water sources, called al-Kudr, but he found no one in the encampments. He sent a group of his companions into the upper part of the valley, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met them in the bottom of the valley. He found shepherds, among them a boy called Yasār. He asked him about the people, and he said: 'I have no knowledge of them; I only bring the cattle to water every five days, and this is a fourth-day, and the people have gone up to the water sources, and we are single men among the cattle.' So he ﷺ stayed three nights and seized the cattle, then he descended to Madinah. They divided their spoils at Ṣirār, three miles from Madinah. The cattle were five hundred camels. He took out its fifth and divided the four-fifths among the Muslims. Each man among them received two young camels, and they were two hundred men. Yasār fell to the share of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he freed him because he saw him praying. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was absent for fifteen nights, and he stayed in Madinah during Shawwāl and Dhū al-Qiʿdah, and during that stay he ransomed most of the captives from Quraysh.
