The Expedition of Banū Sulaym (the Expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr)
غَزْوَةِ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ بِالْكُدْرِ ، وَيُقَالُ لَهَا: قَرْقَرَةُ الْكُدْرِ سُلَيْمٌ (بِضَمِّ السِّينِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ وَفَتْحِ اللَّامِ ). وقَرْقَرَةُ بِفَتْحِ الْقَافِ وَسُكُونِ الرَّاءِ بَعْدَهَا مِثْلُهَا، وَيُقَالُ: قَرَارَةُ الْكُدْرِ. وَالْقَرْقَرَةُ: أَرْضٌ مَلْسَاءُ. وَالْكُدْرُ، (بِضَمِّ الْكَافِ وَسُكُونِ الدَّالِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ ). وَالْكُدْرُ: طَيْرٌ فِي أَلْوَانِهَا كُدْرَةٌ وَعُرِفَ بِهَا ذَلِكَ الْمَوْضِعُ ، يَعْنِي أَنَّهَا مُسْتَقَرُّ هَذِهِ الطُّيُورِ. وقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: كَانَتْ فِي شَوَّالٍ سَنَةَ اثْنَتَيْنِ. وَقَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: كَانَتْ فِي الْمُحَرَّمِ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ. وقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَ فَرَاغُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ بَدْرٍ فِي عَقِبِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، أَوْ فِي شَوَّالَ، وَلَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ لَمْ يُقِمْ بِهَا إِلَّا سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ حَتَّى غَزَا بِنَفْسِهِ يُرِيدُ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ. تنبيه: فَرَّقَ فِي الْعُيُونِ بَيْنَ هَذِهِ الْغَزْوَةِ وَغَزْوَةِ قَرْقَرَةِ الْكُدْرِ، فَذَكَرَ قَبْلَ غَزْوَةِ أُحُدٍ سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ ، عَلَى ذَلِكَ فِي الْمَوْرِدِ. وَالَّذِي ذَكَرَهُ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ وَتَبِعَهُ أَبُو عُمَرَ، وَالْبَيْهَقِيُّ، وَابْنُ كَثِيرٍ، وَابْنُ الْقَيِّمِ، وَغَيْرُهُمْ: خَمْسَةٌ، وَكَذَلِكَ ذَكَرَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ خَالَفَ فِي التَّرْتِيبِ، فَعِنْدَ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ: غَزْوَةُ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ بِالْكُدْرِ، فَغَزْوَةُ السَّوِيقِ، فَغَزْوَةُ ذِي أَمَرَّ، وَهِيَ غَزْوَةُ غَطَفَانَ، فَغَزْوَةُ الْفُرُعِ مِنْ بُحْرَانَ، فَغَزْوَةُ بَنِي قَيْنُقَاعَ. وَعِنْدَ ابْنِ سَعْدٍ: غَزْوَةُ بَنِي قَيْنُقَاعَ يَوْمَ السَّبْتِ لِلنِّصْفِ مِنْ شَوَّالٍ بَعْدَ بَدْرٍ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: فَغَزْوَةُ السَّوِيقِ يَوْمَ الْأَحَدِ الْخَامِسِ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ اثْنَيْنِ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا. وَقَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: فَغَزْوَةُ قَرْقَرَةِ الْكُدْرِ فِي الْمُحَرَّمِ لِلنِّصْفِ مِنْهُ، عَلَى رَأْسِ ثَلَاثَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا. وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: فِي شَوَّالٍ سَنَةَ اثْنَتَيْنِ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: فَغَزْوَةُ غَطَفَانَ فِي الثَّانِي عَشَرَ مِنْ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ عَلَى رَأْسِ خَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا. وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ وَهِيَ ذُو أَمَرَّ. قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: فِي يَوْمِ الْخَمِيسِ الثَّامِنَ عَشَرَ مِنْ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ عَلَى رَأْسِ خَمْسَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا. وَقَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ: فِي شَهْرِ الْمُحَرَّمِ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ. قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: فَغَزْوَةُ بَنِي سُلَيْمٍ فِي السَّادِسِ مِنْ جُمَادَى الْأُولَى عَلَى رَأْسِ سَبْعَةٍ وَعِشْرِينَ شَهْرًا.
Translation
✧ The Expedition of Banū Sulaym at al-Kudr, also called Qarqarat al-Kudr. Sulaym (with ḍammah on the unpointed sīn and fatḥah on the lām). Qarqarah with fatḥah on the qāf and sukūn on the rāʾ followed by another like it; it is also said Qarārat al-Kudr. Al-qarqarah is a smooth land. Al-kudr (with ḍammah on the kāf and sukūn on the unpointed dāl). Al-kudr are birds whose colors have a dusty hue, and that place was known by them, meaning it is the resting place of these birds. Ibn Isḥāq said: It was in Shawwāl of the year two. Al-Wāqidī said: It was in Muḥarram of the year three. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ finished with Badr at the end of the month of Ramaḍān or in Shawwāl. When he arrived in Madinah, he stayed only seven nights before he went out himself on an expedition against Banū Sulaym. Note: In al-ʿUyūn a distinction is made between this expedition and the expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr, and it mentions six expeditions before the expedition of Uḥud, according to that in al-Mawrid. What Ibn Isḥāq mentioned, followed by Abū ʿUmar, al-Bayhaqī, Ibn Kathīr, Ibn al-Qayyim, and others, is five, and likewise Ibn Saʿd mentioned, except that he differed in the order. According to Ibn Isḥāq: the expedition of Banū Sulaym at al-Kudr, then the expedition of al-Sawīq, then the expedition of Dhū Amar, which is the expedition of Ghaṭafān, then the expedition of al-Furuʿ from Buḥrān, then the expedition of Banū Qaynuqāʿ. According to Ibn Saʿd: the expedition of Banū Qaynuqāʿ on Saturday, the middle of Shawwāl, after Badr. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the expedition of al-Sawīq on Sunday, the fifth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, at the head of twenty-two months. Ibn Saʿd said: Then the expedition of Qarqarat al-Kudr in Muḥarram, on its middle, at the head of twenty-three months. Ibn Isḥāq said: In Shawwāl of the year two. Ibn Saʿd said: Then the expedition of Ghaṭafān on the twelfth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal at the head of twenty-five months. Ibn Isḥāq said: And it is Dhū Amar. Ibn Saʿd said: On Thursday, the eighteenth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, at the head of twenty-five months. Ibn Isḥāq said: In the month of Muḥarram of the year three. Ibn Saʿd said: Then the expedition of Banū Sulaym on the sixth of Jumādā al-Ūlā at the head of twenty-seven months.
