✧ Al-Abbas said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, and I and Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib kept close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and did not leave him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a white mule of his, a gift from Farwah b. Na'amah al-Judhami. When the Muslims and the disbelievers met, the Muslims turned in retreat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began spurring his mule toward the disbelievers. Al-Abbas said: I was holding the bridle of the Messenger of Allah's mule, pulling it back to keep it from going fast, and Abu Sufyan was holding the stirrup of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abbas, call out: O companions of the Samurah (the tree under which the pledge was taken).' So I called them. By Allah, when they heard my voice, they turned back like cows turning to their calves, saying: 'At your service, at your service.' They fought the disbelievers, and the call was among the Ansar, saying: 'O company of the Ansar, O company of the Ansar.' Then the call was restricted to Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, saying: 'O Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj, O Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked while on his mule, as if stretching over it to watch their fighting, and said: 'This is when the battle grows hot.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took some pebbles and threw them in the faces of the disbelievers, then said: 'They are defeated, by the Lord of Muhammad.' I went to look and saw the fighting as it was, as far as I could see. By Allah, it was only when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw his pebbles at them that I kept seeing their strength weakening and their affair retreating.
