✧ We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with us were some people from the bedouins. We used to race to the water, and the bedouins would get there before us. A bedouin would outrun his companions, fill the basin, place stones around it, and put a leather mat over it until his companions came. A man from the Ansar came to the bedouin and loosened the halter of his camel to let it drink, but he refused to let him. He pulled out a stone and the water overflowed. The bedouin raised a piece of wood and struck the Ansari's head with it, wounding him. He went to 'Abdullah b. Ubayy, the head of the hypocrites, and told him, as he was one of his companions. 'Abdullah b. Ubayy became angry and said: 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they disperse from around him' - meaning the bedouins. They used to talk to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at meals. 'Abdullah said to his companions: 'When they disperse from Muhammad, then go to Muhammad for food; let him and those with him eat.' Then he said to his companions: 'If you return to Madinah, the mightier will surely expel the humbler from it.' Zayd said: I was riding behind my uncle, so I heard 'Abdullah, and we were his maternal uncles. I told my uncle, and he went and told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him, and he swore, denied, and made excuses, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ believed him and called me a liar. He came to my uncle and said: 'What did you intend? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has hated you and called you a liar, and the Muslims have called you a liar.' Such grief fell upon me as had never fallen upon anyone. While I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and I had nodded off with grief, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me, pulled my ear, and smiled in my face. Nothing would have pleased me more than to have eternal life or the world in exchange for that. Then Abu Bakr caught up with me and said: 'What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you?' I said: 'He did not say anything to me except that he pulled my ear and smiled in my face.' He said: 'Rejoice.' Then 'Umar caught up with me and said: 'What did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to you?' I said to him the same as I said to Abu Bakr. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Munafiqun: {When the hypocrites come to you, they say: We bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah} [al-Munafiqun 1] until he reached {those who say: Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse} [al-Munafiqun 7] until he reached {the mightier will surely expel the humbler from it} [al-Munafiqun 8]. "The two Shaykhs agreed on extracting a few words of this hadith from the hadith of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i from Zayd b. Arqam." Al-Bukhari extracted it as a corroboration for Abu Ishaq from the hadith of Shu'ba from al-Hakam from Muhammad b. Ka'b al-Qurazi from Zayd b. Arqam, but they did not extract it in full, and the chain is authentic. They extracted part of it from it.
