✧ "As for this one, he has told me the truth. Stand until God decides your case." He said: So I stood, and some men of my people from Banu Salimah came back to me and said: "By God, we do not know that you committed any sin in Islam before this. It would have been enough for your sin that the Messenger of God ﷺ ask forgiveness for you. Why did you not excuse yourself to the Messenger of God as those who stayed behind excused themselves to him?" He said: By God, they kept reproaching me until I almost started to disbelieve myself. He said: So I said: "Did anyone experience this along with me?" He said: "Two men experienced it with you; they were told what you were told." I said: "Who are they?" They said: "Hilal b. Umayyah al-Waqifi and Murarah b. al-Rabi' al-'Amiri." They mentioned two righteous men who had been present at Badr, and in them I had an example. He said: And the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade speaking to us, the three men, among those who stayed behind from him. He said: So the people avoided us and did not speak to us. By God, I felt estranged from myself, and the earth seemed estranged to me in my own mind; it was not the earth I used to know. As for my two companions, they submitted and sat in their houses. As for me, I was the youngest and most vigorous of the people, so I would attend the prayer with the Muslims and walk in the markets, but no one would speak to me. I would come to the Messenger of God ﷺ and pray with him, then greet him and say to myself: "Did he move his lips in reply to me?" I would steal glances at him. When I turned to my prayer, he would turn toward me, but when I turned toward him, he would turn away from me. When the harshness of the Muslims toward us had gone on for a long time, I went to Abu Qatadah, who was my cousin and the dearest of people to me, and I spoke to him. By God, he did not speak to me. I said: "O Abu Qatadah, I adjure you by God: do you know that I love God and His Messenger?" He said: "God and His Messenger know best." He said: So my eyes overflowed, and I climbed over the wall and went on. One day while I was in the market, a Nabatean from the Nabateans of Syria came to me with a letter from the king of Ghassan, and he was saying: "Who will direct me to Ka'b b. Malik?" The people began pointing to me. I took the letter, for I could read, and there it was from the king of Ghassan, and in it: "To proceed: It has reached us that your companion has banished you. God would not place you in a house of humiliation or loss, so join us and we will console you!" He said: I said: "This too is part of the evil." I took the letter and headed to the oven with it and kindled it. When forty nights had passed since the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade speaking to us, the messenger of the Messenger of God ﷺ came to me and said: "The Messenger of God commands you to keep away from your wife." I said: "Should I divorce her, or what should I do with her?" He said: "Do not go near her." So I said to my wife: "O woman, go to your family until God decides in this matter." And he sent the same to my two companions. He said: Then the wife of Hilal b. Umayyah came and said: "O Messenger of God, Hilal is a helpless man and has no servant. Would you dislike me serving him?" He said: "No, but he must not come near you." She said: "O Messenger of God, by God, he has made no movement toward anything of that since his affair began; he only weeps." Then some of my family said to me: "Why don't you ask the Messenger of God permission regarding your wife, since he gave permission to the wife of Hilal?" I said: "By God, I will not do it. I am a young man and I do not know what the Messenger of God will say." He said: While I was in that state, on the morning of the fiftieth night since the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade speaking to us, I prayed the dawn prayer on the roof of a house of ours, then I sat in the state that God mentioned: "the earth became straitened for them despite its vastness, and their own selves became straitened for them, and they thought there was no refuge from God except to Him," when I heard the voice of a caller raised on Mount Sal', and a man galloped a horse to me. The voice reached me faster than the horse: "Rejoice, O Ka'b b. Malik!" I fell down in prostration, and I knew that relief had come. The one whose voice I had heard came, and I took off two garments that were on me—by God, I owned no others—and gave them to him as a reward for good news. Then I borrowed two garments and put them on, and went to the Prophet ﷺ. Ka'b said: Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who was kind to me in my affair, told me that the Messenger of God ﷺ was with her that night. When a third of the night remained, our repentance descended upon him, and he said to her: "O Umm Salamah, repentance has been accepted for Ka'b b. Malik and his two companions." She said: I said: "O Messenger of God, shall I not send to him and give him the good news?" He said: "Then the people would crowd you and prevent you from sleeping the rest of the night." And the Messenger of God ﷺ announced God's acceptance of our repentance after he had prayed the dawn prayer. He said: So bearers of good news went to my two companions, and bearers of good news went to me. Ka'b said: I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ with the Muhajirun and Ansar around him, and his face was shining as if it were a piece of the moon. Whenever he was pleased with something, his face would shine. Talhah b. 'Ubayd Allah ؓ stood up for me, hurrying until he congratulated me and shook my hand. By God, no man among the Muhajirun stood up other than him, so Ka'b never forgot it for Talhah. He said: The Muslims began congratulating me on God's acceptance of my repentance, saying: "May God's acceptance of repentance bring you joy, may God's acceptance of repentance bring you joy," until I reached the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he saw me, he said: "Come, O Ka'b, and rejoice in the best day that has come upon you since the day your mother gave birth to you." I said: "O Messenger of God, is it from you or from God?" He said: "Rather, it is from God." I said: "O Messenger of God, part of my repentance is that I divest myself of all my wealth as charity to God and His Messenger." He said: "O Ka'b, keep some of your wealth, for it is better for you." I said: "O Messenger of God, I will keep my share at Khaybar." And I said: "O Messenger of God, God, Mighty and Majestic, saved me only by truthfulness, and part of my repentance is that I will never speak anything but truth as long as I live." Ka'b said: By God, I do not know anyone whom God has tested in truthful speech as He has tested me. By God, I have never deliberately told a lie since I said that to the Messenger of God ﷺ until this day of mine, and I hope God will protect me in what remains. He said: Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: "God has turned in mercy to the Prophet, and to the Muhajirun and the Ansar"—the two verses together.
