✧ The account of Biʾr Maʿūnah in Safar of the year four [The dispatch to Biʾr Maʿūnah]. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ remained for the rest of Shawwāl, Dhū al-Qaʿdah, and Dhū al-Ḥijjah—the polytheists oversaw that pilgrimage—and al-Muḥarram. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ dispatched the companions of Biʾr Maʿūnah in Safar, at the beginning of the fourth month after Uḥud. [The reason for sending them] Their account, as my father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me from al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm, and others from the people of knowledge, they said: Abū Barāʾ ʿĀmir b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar, Mulaʿib al-Asinnah, came to the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah. The Messenger of God ﷺ presented Islam to him and called him to it, but he did not embrace Islam, yet he was not far from it. He said: O Muḥammad, if you were to send men from your companions to the people of Najd, to call them to your matter, I hope they would respond to you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: I fear the people of Najd for them. Abū Barāʾ said: I am their protector, so send them to call the people to your matter. [The men of the dispatch] So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr, the brother of the Banū Sāʿidah—the one who hastened to die—with forty men of his companions from the best of the Muslims. Among them were al-Ḥārith b. al-Ṣimmah, Ḥarām b. Milḥān the brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, ʿUrwah b. Asmāʾ b. al-Ṣalt al-Sulamī, Nāfiʿ b. Budayl b. Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī, and ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah the client of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, among named men from the best of the Muslims. They journeyed until they encamped at Biʾr Maʿūnah, which lies between the land of the Banū ʿĀmir and the Ḥarrah of the Banū Sulaym—both territories are close to it, though it is nearer to the Ḥarrah of the Banū Sulaym.

✧ The treachery of ʿĀmir toward the Prophet's companions on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah. When they alighted there, they sent Ḥarām b. Milḥān with the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the enemy of Allah, ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl. When he came to him, he did not look at his letter until he fell upon the man and killed him. Then he called upon the Banū ʿĀmir for help against them, but they refused to answer him to what he summoned them and said: 'We will not break faith with Abū Barāʾ, for he concluded for them a pact and protection.' So he called upon for help against them clans of the Banū Sulaym from ʿUṣayyah, Riʿl, and Dhakwān, and they answered him to that. They went out until they fell upon the people and surrounded them in their camp. When they saw them, they took their swords and then fought them until they were killed to the last of them, may Allah have mercy on them—except Kaʿb b. Zayd, brother of the Banū Dīnār b. al-Najjār, for they left him while he still had a spark of life. He was carried away wounded from among the slain and lived until he was killed as a martyr on the day of the Khandaq, may Allah have mercy on him.

✧ Ibn Umayyah and al-Mundhir and their stance toward the people after they learned of the killing of their companions: ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī and a man from the Anṣār, one of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, were pasturing the people's animals. Ibn Hishām said: He was al-Mundhir b. Muḥammad b. ʿUqbah b. Uḥayḥah b. al-Julāḥ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Nothing told them of the calamity that befell their companions except birds hovering over the army. He said: By God, these birds have some matter. They came forward to look, and there were the men in their blood, and there were the horses that had struck them standing. The Anṣārī said to ʿAmr b. Umayyah: What do you think? He said: I think we should join the Messenger of God ﷺ and tell him the news. The Anṣārī said: But I would not prefer my own life to the place where al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr was killed, and men shall never tell me of it. Then he fought the people until he was killed. They took ʿAmr b. Umayyah prisoner. When he told them that he was from Muḍar, ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl released him, cut off his forelock, and freed him in place of a neck he claimed was owed by his mother.

✧ [The killing of the two ʿĀmirīs] ʿAmr b. Umayyah went out until when he was at al-Qarqarah from the beginning of Qanāh, two men from Banū ʿĀmir approached. Ibn Hishām said: (then) from Banū Kilāb, and Abū ʿAmr al-Madanī mentioned that they were from Banū Sulaym. Ibn Isḥāq said: until they alighted with him in a shade where he was. The two ʿĀmirīs had a covenant from the Messenger of God ﷺ and a protection, which ʿAmr b. Umayyah did not know. He had asked them when they alighted, "From whom are you two?" They said, "From Banū ʿĀmir." So he granted them respite until when they slept, he fell upon them and killed them, thinking that he had thereby attained vengeance from Banū ʿĀmir for what they had done to the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When ʿAmr b. Umayyah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and informed him of the news, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "You have killed two slain men; I shall surely pay their bloodwit."

✧ [The Messenger's grief from the action of Abū Barāʾ] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "This is the action of Abū Barāʾ. I had been averse to this, fearful of it." That reached Abū Barāʾ, and it distressed him that ʿĀmir had broken his protection, and what had befallen the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ because of him and his protection. Among those who were killed was ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah. [The affair of Ibn Fuhayrah after his death] Ibn Isḥāq said: Hishām b. ʿUrwah narrated to me, from his father: that ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl used to say: "Who was the man among them who, when he was killed, I saw raised between heaven and earth, until I saw the sky below him?" They said: "He was ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah."

✧ [ The reason for the conversion of Ibn Salmā ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the Banū Jabbār b. Salmā b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar narrated to me, saying—and Jabbār was among those who were present that day with ʿĀmir, then he became a Muslim—he would say: Indeed, among what called me to Islam was that I thrust a man of theirs that day with a spear between his shoulder blades, and I looked at the spearhead when it came out from his chest, and I heard him say: “I have triumphed, by God.” So I said to myself: “What has he triumphed? Have I not killed the man?” He said: Until I asked after that about his statement, and they said: “For martyrdom.” So I said: “He has triumphed, by the life of God.”

✧ [Poem of Ḥassān inciting the Banū Abī Barāʾ against ʿĀmir] Ibn Isḥāq said: And Ḥassān b. Thābit said, inciting the Banū Abī Barāʾ against ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl: Banū Umm al-Banīn, were you not alarmed, while you are of the foremost of the people of Najd, By ʿĀmir's mockery of Abū Barāʾ, that he might betray his protection—and no error is like deliberate wrong? Oh, convey to Rabīʿah, possessor of noble deeds—what have you brought about in the vicissitudes after me? Your father is the father of wars, Abū Barāʾ, and your maternal uncle is the glorious Ḥakam b. Saʿd. [The lineage of Ḥakam and Umm al-Banīn] Ibn Hishām said: Ḥakam b. Saʿd was of al-Qayn b. Jasr, and Umm al-Banīn was the daughter of ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and she was the mother of Abū Barāʾ. [Rabīʿah's spear thrust at ʿĀmir] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Rabīʿah b. ʿĀmir b. Mālik charged at ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl and thrust him with the spear. It struck his thigh but did not kill him, and he fell from his horse. He said: "This is the work of Abū Barāʾ. If I die, my blood belongs to my paternal uncle, so let no retaliation be sought for it. But if I live, I shall see my own opinion regarding what has been done to me."

Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī—said: I left Ibn Warqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī lying in the battlefield, the whirlwinds sweeping dust over him. I remembered Abū al-Rayyān when I saw him, and I knew that I would be avenged for that. Abū al-Rayyān is Ṭuʿaymah b. ʿAdī. And ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said, weeping for Nāfiʿ b. Budayl b. Warqāʾ: May God have mercy on Nāfiʿ b. Budayl, the mercy of one who seeks the reward of jihād, Steadfast, truthful, faithful; when the people spoke much, he spoke the word of what is right.

✧ [Poem of Ḥassān in lament for the slain of Biʾr Maʿūnah] Ḥassān b. Thābit said, lamenting the slain of Biʾr Maʿūnah, and singling out al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr: For the slain of Maʿūnah, then weep profusely with tears of the eye, pouring, not scant, for the horsemen of the Messenger the morning they met their fates, and they met them by decree. Destruction befell them through a compact of a people whose rope's knot was betrayed with treachery. O my grief for Mundhir when he turned away and hastened into his death with steadfastness. How many fell that morning, then, of fair-skinned noble ones from the best of ʿAmr. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī recited to me its last verse as a single line.

✧ [Kaʿb's poem about the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah] He recited to me for Kaʿb b. Mālik about the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah, reproaching Banū Jaʿfar b. Kilāb: You left your neighbor to Banū Sulaym, fearing their war, out of weakness and dishonor. If a rope from ʿUqayl were within reach, he would stretch with its rope a strong rope, or al-Quraṭāʾ—they did not surrender him; and long ago they did not keep faith when you do not betray. [The lineage of al-Quraṭāʾ] Ibn Hishām said: Al-Quraṭāʾ is a tribe from Hawāzin. It is also narrated "from Nufayl" instead of "from ʿUqayl," and that is the correct version, because al-Quraṭāʾ is from Nufayl near.
