    ✧ The Account of the Building of the Kaʿbah and the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ Judgment among Quraysh Concerning the Placement of the Stone The Reason for Quraysh's Rebuilding of the Kaʿbah Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached thirty-five years of age, Quraysh gathered to rebuild the Kaʿbah. They were intending to roof it, but they were afraid of demolishing it. It was only a structure of loose stones above a man's height, so they wanted to raise it and roof it. That was because some men stole a treasure of the Kaʿbah, which was kept in a well inside the Kaʿbah. The one with whom the treasure was found was Duwayk, a mawlā of the Banū Mulayḥ b. ʿAmr of Khuzāʿah. Ibn Hishām said: Quraysh cut off his hand. Quraysh claimed that those who stole it had placed it with Duwayk. The sea had cast ashore at Jeddah a ship belonging to a merchant of the Byzantines, and it had broken apart. They took its timber and prepared it for roofing the Kaʿbah. In Makkah there was a Coptic carpenter, so they had among themselves some of what would set it right. There was a snake that would come out of the well of the Kaʿbah, into which was thrown what was offered to it every day, and it would sun itself on the wall of the Kaʿbah. It was something they feared, for no one would approach it but it would rear up, hiss, and open its mouth. They were afraid of it. While it was one day sunning itself on the wall of the Kaʿbah as it used to do, Allah sent a bird against it which snatched it and went off with it. Quraysh said: 'We hope that Allah has been pleased with what we intend. We have a gentle craftsman, we have timber, and Allah has spared us the snake.'

    ✧ [What happened to Abū Wahb during Quraysh's rebuilding of the Kaʿbah] When they had resolved their affair concerning its demolition and rebuilding, Abū Wahb b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀʾidh b. ʿAbd b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm — Ibn Hishām said: ʿĀʾidh b. ʿImrān b. Makhzūm — rose and took a stone from the Kaʿbah, and it leapt from his hand until it returned to its place. He said: “O assembly of Quraysh, do not bring into its building from your earnings anything but what is good; do not bring into it the hire of a prostitute, the sale of usury, or anything wrongfully taken from any of the people.” The people attribute this speech to al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ al-Makkī related to me that it was told to him from ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān b. Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, that he saw a son of Jaʿdah b. Hubayrah b. Abī Wahb b. ʿAmr circumambulating the House, and he asked about him. It was said: “This is a son of Jaʿdah b. Hubayrah.” ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān then said: “That is the grandfather of this one — meaning Abū Wahb — who took a stone from the Kaʿbah when Quraysh had resolved to demolish it, and it leapt from his hand until it returned to its place. He then said: ‘O assembly of Quraysh, do not bring into its building from your earnings anything but what is good; do not bring into it the hire of a prostitute, the sale of usury, or anything wrongfully taken from any of the people.’”

    ✧ [Abū Wahb's Kinship to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Wahb was the maternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ father. He was noble, and about him an Arab poet says: If only at Abū Wahb's I had made my mount kneel, its saddle would have gone forth from his bounty not disappointed— to a fair one of the two branches of Luʾayy b. Ghālib, when their lineages are traced in the forelocks— one who refuses to accept injustice, who delights in generosity; his two grandfathers occupied the midst of the branches of the best. Great is the ash of his cooking-pot; his bowls he fills with bread, over which are heaped things like mantles. [The Division of the Kaʿbah among Quraysh, and the Share of Each Party of Them] Then Quraysh divided the Kaʿbah into portions. The side of the door belonged to Banū ʿAbd Manāf and Zuhrah. What was between the Black Corner and the Yamānī Corner belonged to Banū Makhzūm and tribes of Quraysh who joined them. The back of the Kaʿbah belonged to Banū Jumaḥ and Sahm, the two sons of ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy. The side of the Stone belonged to Banū ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy, to Banū Asad b. al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy, and to Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy—and that is the Ḥaṭīm.

    ✧ [Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, the Demolition of the Kaʿbah, and What They Found Beneath the Demolition] Then the people feared to demolish it and shrank from it, so al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah said: “I shall be the first of you in demolishing it.” He took the pickaxe, then stood over it, saying: “O Allah, may You not be frightened — Ibn Hishām said: it is also said: we have not deviated — O Allah, we intend nothing but good.” Then he demolished from the side of the two corners, and the people waited that night, saying: “We shall see. If he is smitten, we will not demolish any of it and we will restore it as it was; but if nothing befalls him, then Allah is pleased with what we have done, so we will demolish.” Al-Walīd rose in the morning after that night, going early to his work, and he demolished, and the people demolished with him, until when the demolition brought them to the foundation, the foundation of Ibrāhīm ﷺ, they came upon green stones like camel humps, each interlocked with the other. Ibn Isḥāq said: One of those who transmit the report narrated to me that a man of Quraysh, among those who were demolishing it, inserted a crowbar between two of its stones to pry one of them up with it. When the stone moved, all of Makkah quaked, so they stopped at that foundation. Ibn Isḥāq said: I was told that Quraysh found in the corner a writing in Syriac, and they did not know what it was until a man of the Jews read it for them. And there it was: “I am Allah, Lord of Bakkah. I created it on the day I created the heavens and the earth, and I formed the sun and the moon, and I surrounded it with seven upright angels. It shall not cease until its two mountains cease to be. Blessed is it for its people in water and milk.” Ibn Hishām said: Its two mountains. Ibn Isḥāq said: I was told that they found in the Maqām a writing in which was: “Makkah is the Sacred House of Allah. Its provision comes to it from three roads; its first inhabitant shall not make it lawful.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Layth b. Abī Sulaym claimed that they found a stone in the Kaʿbah forty years before the sending of the Prophet ﷺ — if what he mentioned is true — on which was written: “Whoever sows good shall harvest gladness; whoever sows evil shall harvest regret. You commit evil deeds and are rewarded with good deeds? No, just as grapes are not gathered from thornbushes.”

    ✧ [Quraysh's Dispute over Who Would Place the Stone and the Blood Oath] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the clans of Quraysh gathered the stones for its building, each clan gathering on its own, then they built it, until the building reached the place of the corner. Then they disputed over it, each clan wanting to raise it to its place to the exclusion of the others, until they provoked one another and swore oaths, and prepared for fighting. Banū ʿAbd al-Dār brought forward a bowl filled with blood, then they and Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy made a pact for death, and they inserted their hands into that blood in that bowl, so they were called the Lickers of the Blood. Quraysh remained in that state for four nights or five, then they gathered in the mosque, and took counsel together and dealt fairly with one another.

    ✧ Some of the transmitters claimed that Abū Umayyah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm—and he was at that time the oldest of all Quraysh—said: “O assembly of Quraysh, appoint as judge among you in the matter over which you disagree the first man who enters from the gate of this mosque, and let him decide among you concerning it.” They did so. The first to enter upon them was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When they saw him they said: “This is al-Amīn; we are content; this is Muḥammad.” When he came to them and they told him the news, he ﷺ said: “Bring me a garment.” It was brought to him, and he took the corner (the Black Stone) and placed it in it with his own hand. Then he said: “Let each tribe take hold of a side of the garment, then raise it all together.” They did so, until when they had brought it to its place, he placed it with his own hand, then built upon it.

    ✧ [Al-Zubayr's Poetry About the Snake That Made Quraysh Fear the Building of the Kaʿbah] Quraysh, Quraysh feared the building of the Kaʿbah because of it: I marveled at what the eagle swooped down upon—the serpent—while it had a writhing motion. It used to have a hissing sound, and at times it had a leaping attack. Whenever we rose to lay the foundations, it would charge, making us fear the building, and it was indeed fearsome. But when we dreaded the affliction, an eagle came gliding down in a swift descent. It seized it and carried it away, then left the building clear for us, with no barrier. So we rose, gathering in force, to a construction for which we had the foundations and the earth. On the morning we raised the foundation of it, while those who leveled for us wore no garments. By it, the Sovereign honored Banū Luʾayy; their root shall never perish from among them. There gathered Banū ʿAdī and Murrah, preceded by Kilāb. And so the Sovereign settled us in glory thereby, and with God is sought the reward. Ibn Hishām said: It is also related: "while those who level for us wore no garments."
