Translation
✧ [Al-Zubayr's Poetry About the Snake That Made Quraysh Fear the Building of the Kaʿbah] Quraysh, Quraysh feared the building of the Kaʿbah because of it: I marveled at what the eagle swooped down upon—the serpent—while it had a writhing motion. It used to have a hissing sound, and at times it had a leaping attack. Whenever we rose to lay the foundations, it would charge, making us fear the building, and it was indeed fearsome. But when we dreaded the affliction, an eagle came gliding down in a swift descent. It seized it and carried it away, then left the building clear for us, with no barrier. So we rose, gathering in force, to a construction for which we had the foundations and the earth. On the morning we raised the foundation of it, while those who leveled for us wore no garments. By it, the Sovereign honored Banū Luʾayy; their root shall never perish from among them. There gathered Banū ʿAdī and Murrah, preceded by Kilāb. And so the Sovereign settled us in glory thereby, and with God is sought the reward. Ibn Hishām said: It is also related: "while those who level for us wore no garments."
