✧ [His ﷺ departure to Syria on Khadījah's trade and what happened with Baḥīrā] Ibn Isḥāq said: Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid was a merchant woman of dignity and wealth. She used to hire men for her property and give it to them as a speculative venture, for a share she assigned to them. Quraysh were a trading people. When she heard about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what she heard—of his truthful speech, great trustworthiness, and noble character—she sent to him and offered him to go out with property of hers to Syria as a merchant, and that she would give him the best of what she gave other merchants, along with a servant of hers called Maysarah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted it from her and went out with that property of hers, and her servant Maysarah went out with him until he arrived in Syria. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ alighted in the shade of a tree near the cell of a monk from among the monks. The monk looked at Maysarah and said to him: "Who is this man who has alighted under this tree?" Maysarah said to him: "This is a man from Quraysh, from the people of the sanctuary." The monk said to him: "None has alighted under this tree ever but a prophet."

✧ [Khadījah's Desire to Marry Him] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sold the goods he had set out with, and bought what he wished to buy, then returned to Makkah with Maysarah. Maysarah—as they assert—used to see, when it was midday and the heat had become intense, two angels shading him from the sun while he was riding his camel. When he arrived in Makkah to Khadījah with her wealth, she sold what he had brought, and it doubled or nearly so. Maysarah told her about the monk's words, and about what he had seen of the two angels shading him. Khadījah was a resolute, noble, and intelligent woman, along with what Allah willed for her of His honour. When Maysarah told her what he told her, she sent to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him—as they assert—"O son of my uncle, I have desired you because of our kinship, your standing among your people, your trustworthiness, your good character, and your truthfulness in speech." Then she offered herself to him. Khadījah at that time was the most distinguished woman of Quraysh in lineage, the greatest of them in honour, and the wealthiest of them; every man of her people was eager for that from her, if he could attain it. [Khadījah's Lineage] She was Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy b. Kilāb b. Murrah b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr. Her mother was Fāṭimah bt. Zāʾidah b. al-Aṣamm b. Rawāḥah b. Ḥajar b. ʿAbd b. Maʿīṣ b. ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. Fihr. Fāṭimah's mother was Hālah bt. ʿAbd Manāf b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmr b. Munfidh b. ʿAmr b. Maʿīṣ b. ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy b. Ghālib b. ✧ [His ﷺ Marriage to Khadījah] When she said that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he mentioned it to his uncles, and his uncle Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, may Allah have mercy on him, went out with him until he entered upon Khuwaylid b. Asad and asked for her hand in marriage from him, and he married her. Ibn Hishām said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her a dowry of twenty young camels. She was the first woman whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married, and he did not marry any other woman while she was alive until she died ؓ. [His ﷺ Children from Khadījah] Ibn Isḥāq said: She bore the Messenger of Allah ﷺ all his children except Ibrāhīm: al-Qāsim, by whom he ﷺ was given the kunyah, al-Ṭāhir, al-Ṭayyib, Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthūm, and Fāṭimah, peace be upon them. Ibn Hishām said: The eldest of his sons was al-Qāsim, then al-Ṭayyib, then al-Ṭāhir; and the eldest of his daughters was Ruqayyah, then Zaynab, then Umm Kulthūm, then Fāṭimah. Ibn Isḥāq said: As for al-Qāsim, al-Ṭayyib, and al-Ṭāhir, they died in the pre-Islamic era. As for his daughters, all of them lived into Islam, embraced it, and emigrated with him ﷺ. [The Mother of Ibrāhīm] Ibn Hishām said: As for Ibrāhīm, his mother was Māriyah the Copt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb related to us from Ibn Lahīʿah, who said: The mother of Ibrāhīm was Māriyah, the concubine of the Prophet ﷺ, whom al-Muqawqis gave to him from Ḥafn in the district of Anṣinā.

✧ [The Account of Khadījah with Waraqah and the Truth of Waraqah's Prophecy Concerning Him ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid had mentioned to Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, who was her paternal cousin, and he was a Christian who had studied the scriptures and acquired knowledge from the learning of the people—she mentioned to him what her servant Maysarah had told her of the monk's saying, and what he had observed of him when the two angels were shading him. Waraqah said: "If this is true, O Khadījah, Muḥammad is indeed the prophet of this community, and I have known that a prophet is expected to come to this community, and this is his time," or as he said. (He said): So Waraqah began to deem the matter slow in coming and to say: "Until when?" Waraqah said about that: I have persisted, and I was in remembrance persistent For a grief that long has stirred my sobbing; And a description after a description from Khadījah, So my waiting has grown long, O Khadīj, In the hollow of the two Makkahs, hoping For your talk, that I may see from it an issue, From what a priest of the monks told us, Which I would hate to be crooked: That Muḥammad will prevail among us, And defeat whoever contends with him, And a radiant light will appear in the lands By which the creation will be kept from turmoil. Then whoever fights him will meet with loss, And whoever makes peace with him will meet with success. Would that I were present when that happens, And that I were the first of them to enter, To enter into that which Quraysh detested, Even if they clamor in their Makkah with clamor. I hope, because of that which they all detested, Toward the Lord of the Throne, that if they descend, they ascend. And is the matter of descent anything but disbelief In Him who chooses from the fish of the constellations? If they remain and I remain, then events will come At which the disbelievers will cry out with a great cry. And if I perish, every young man will meet From the decrees a destructive departure. I have persisted.
