57. Astrology
أَنَّهُمْ بَيْنَمَا هُمْ جُلُوسٌ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ رُمِيَ بِنَجْمٍ فَاسْتَنَارَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا كُنْتُمْ تَقُولُونَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا رُمِيَ بِمِثْلِ هَذَا؟ » قَالُوا كُنَّا نَقُولُ وُلِدَ اللَّيْلَةَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ وَمَاتَ اللَّيْلَةَ رَجُلٌ عَظِيمٌ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَإِنَّهَا لَا تُرْمَى لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ وَلَكِنَّ رَبَّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى إِذَا قَضَى أَمْرًا سَبَّحَ حَمَلَةُ الْعَرْشِ ثُمَّ سَبَّحَ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَهُمْ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ التَّسْبِيحُ أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا فَيَقُولُ الَّذِينَ يَلُونَ حَمَلَةَ الْعَرْشِ مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ؟ فَيُخْبِرُونَهُمْ فَيُخْبِرُ أَهْلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْخَبَرُ أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَخْطَفُ الْجِنُّ فَيُلْقُونَهُ إِلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ وَيُرْمَوْنَ فَمَا جَاءُوا بِهِ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ فَهُوَ حَقٌّ وَلَكِنَّهُمْ يَقْرِفُونَ فِيهِ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ»
✧ While they were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a star was thrown (a meteor) and it lit up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: 'What did you used to say in the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah) when such a thing was thrown?' They said: 'We used to say: Tonight a great man is born, and tonight a great man has died.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is not thrown for the death of anyone or for his life. But our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, when He decrees a matter, the bearers of the Throne glorify Him, then the people of the heaven who are next to them glorify, until the glorification reaches the people of the lowest heaven. Then those next to the bearers of the Throne say: What did your Lord say? They inform them, and the people of the heavens inform one another until the news reaches the people of the lowest heaven. The jinn snatch (the word) and cast it to their allies, and they are pelted (with meteors). What they bring as it is, is true, but they add falsehood to it or they increase (in it).'
«لَوْ أَمْسَكَ اللَّهُ الْقَطْرَ عَنِ النَّاسِ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَهُ لَأَصْبَحَتْ طَائِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ بِهَا كَافِرِينَ يَقُولُونَ مُطِرْنَا بِنَوْءِ الْمِجْدَحِ»
✧ 'If Allah were to withhold rain from the people for seven years, then send it down, a group of them would become disbelievers because of it, saying: We were given rain by the star of al-Mijdah.'
«الْعِيَافَةُ وَالطِّيَرَةُ وَالطَّرْقُ مِنَ الْجِبْتِ»
✧ 'Al-iyafah (fortune-telling by birds), al-tiyarah (bird omens), and al-tarq (geomancy) are from al-jibt (devil worship).'
صَلَّى لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَاةَ الصُّبْحِ بِالْحُدَيْبِيَةِ فِي إِثْرِ سَمَاءٍ كَانَتْ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ أَقْبَلَ عَلَى النَّاسِ فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ؟ » قَالُوا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ «قَالَ أَصْبَحَ مِنْ عِبَادِي مُؤْمِنٌ بِي وَكَافِرٌ فَأَمَّا مَنْ قَالَ مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ فَذَلِكَ مُؤْمِنٌ بِي كَافِرٌ بِالْكَوْكَبِ وَأَمَّا مَنْ قَالَ مُطِرْنَا بِنَوْءِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَذَلِكَ كَافِرٌ بِي مُؤْمِنٌ بِالْكَوْكَبِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the morning prayer at Hudaybiyyah after rain had fallen during the night. When he finished, he faced the people and said: 'Do you know what your Lord said?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'He said: Some of My servants have become believers in Me and disbelievers, (while others have become) disbelievers in Me and believers in the stars. As for those who say: We were given rain by the favor of Allah and His mercy, those are believers in Me and disbelievers in the stars. As for those who say: We were given rain by such-and-such a star, those are disbelievers in Me and believers in the stars.'
«لَا عَدْوَى وَلَا هَامَةَ وَلَا صَفَرَ وَلَا نَوْءَ»
✧ 'There is no contagion, no hamah (death-owl), no safar (month of Safar), and no naw' (rain star).'
«مَفَاتِحُ الْعِلْمِ خَمْسٌ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا اللَّهُ لَا يَعْلَمُ مَا تَغِيضُ الْأَرْحَامُ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَا فِي غَدٍ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَتَى يَأْتِي الْمَطَرُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ مَتَى تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا اللَّهُ»
✧ 'The keys of the unseen are five, none knows them but Allah: none knows what the wombs diminish except Allah, none knows what is in tomorrow except Allah, none knows when the rain comes except Allah, no soul knows in which land it will die except Allah, and none knows when the Hour will occur except Allah.'
مُطِرْنَا وَنَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَحَسَرَ عَنْ ثَوْبِهِ لِلْمَطَرِ قُلْنَا لِمَ صَنَعْتَ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «إِنَّهُ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِرَبِّهِ»
✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and rain fell, and he bared part of his garment to the rain. We said: 'Why did you do this, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Because it has recently been with its Lord.'
