«ضَالَّةُ الْمُسْلِمِ حَرَقُ النَّارِ»
✧ The stray camel of a Muslim is the fuel of the Fire.
قَدِمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ رَهْطٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرٍ فَقَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَجِدُ فِي الطَّرِيقِ هَوَامِي مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَقَالَ ﷺ «ضَالَّةُ الْمُسْلِمِ حَرَقُ النَّارِ»
✧ A group from Banū ʿĀmir came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we find stray camels on the road." He ﷺ said, "The stray camel of a Muslim is the fuel of the Fire."
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ «لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا»
✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about lost property. He said, "Know its container and its tying string, then announce it for a year. If its owner comes, [return it]; otherwise, it is your responsibility." He asked about stray sheep. He said, "It is for you, or your brother, or the wolf." He asked about stray camels. He said, "What do you have to do with them? They have their water-skin and their shoes; they go to water and eat trees until their owner finds them."
أَتَى رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ قَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً» قَالَ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَأْتِ لَهَا طَالِبٌ فَاسْتَنْفِقْهَا قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ؟ قَالَ «لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ؟ قَالَ «مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا رَبُّهَا»
✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was with him and asked him about lost property. He said, "Know its container and its tying string, then announce it for a year." He said, "If no one claims it, then spend it." He asked about stray sheep. He said, "It is for you, or your brother, or the wolf." He asked about stray camels. He said, "They have their water-skin and their shoes; they go to water and eat trees until their owner finds them."
خَرَجْتُ مَعَ زَيْدِ بْنِ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ فَالْتَقَطْتُ سَوْطًا فَقَالَا دَعْهُ فَقُلْتُ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَدَعُهُ تَأْكُلُهُ السِّبَاعُ لَأَسْتَمْتِعَنَّ بِهِ فَقَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَلَقِيتُ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ إِنِّي أَصَبْتُ صُرَّةً فِيهَا دَنَانِيرُ فَأَتَيْتُ بِهَا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا حَوْلًا فَلَمْ أَجِدْ أَحَدًا فَعَرَّفْتُهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَحْوَالٍ» ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ «احْفَظْ وِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا وَعَدَدَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ فَادْفَعْهَا وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا»
✧ I went out with Zayd b. Ṣūḥān and Salmān b. Rabīʿah, and I picked up a whip. They said, "Leave it." I said, "By Allah, I will not leave it for wild animals to eat. I will make use of it." Then I came to Madinah and met Ubayy b. Kaʿb. He said, "You did well. I once found a purse containing dinars and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. He said, 'Announce it for a year.' I did not find anyone, so I announced it for three years. Then I came to him, and he said, 'Memorize its container, its tying string, and its number. If someone comes and informs you, give it to him; otherwise, make use of it.'"
خَرَجْتُ مَعَ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ صُوحَانَ فَالْتَقَطْتُ سَوْطًا بِالْعُذَيْبِ فَقَالَا دَعْهُ فَقُلْتُ لَا أَدَعُهُ تَأْكُلُهُ السِّبَاعُ فَقَدِمْتُ إِلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ فَحَدَّثْتُهُ بِالْحَدِيثِ فَقَالَ أَحْسَنْتَ أَحْسَنْتَ الْتَقَطْتُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِائَةَ دِينَارٍ فَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهَا فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا» فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا» فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا» فَعَرَّفْتُهَا حَوْلًا ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُهُ فَقَالَ «اعْلَمْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ يُخْبِرُكَ بِعَدَدِهَا وَوِعَائِهَا وَوِكَائِهَا فَأَعْطِهِ إِيَّاهَا وَإِلَّا فَاسْتَمْتِعْ بِهَا»
✧ I went out with Salmān b. Rabīʿah and Zayd b. Ṣūḥān, and I picked up a whip at al-ʿUdhayb. They said, "Leave it." I said, "I will not leave it for wild animals to eat." Then I came to Ubayy b. Kaʿb and told him the story. He said, "You did well, you did well. I found a hundred dinars during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and brought them to him. He said, 'Announce it.' I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, 'Announce it.' I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, 'Announce it.' I announced it for a year, then came to him. He said, 'Know its number, its container, and its tying string. If someone comes and informs you of its number, container, and tying string, give it to him; otherwise, make use of it.'"
أَنَّ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْإِبِلِ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا فَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ وَتَرِدُ الْمَاءَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَهَا بَاغِيهَا» وَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ضَالَّةِ الْغَنَمِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» ثُمَّ سَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «اعْرِفْ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَعَرَفَ عَدَدَهَا وَوِعَاءَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا فَأَعْطِهَا إِيَّاهُ وَإِلَّا فَهِيَ لَكَ»
✧ A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about stray camels. He said: "What do you have to do with them? They have their own water-skins and shoes; leave them to eat trees and drink water until their owner finds them." He also asked him about stray sheep, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "They are for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf." Then he asked him about found property, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Note its number, its container, and its tie. If its owner comes and knows its number, its container, and its tie, give it to him; otherwise, it is yours."
«مَنِ الْتَقَطَ لُقَطَةً فَلْيُشْهِدْ ذَوِي عَدْلٍ ثُمَّ لَا يَكْتُمُ وَلَا يُغَيِّرُ فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا وَإِلَّا فَهُوَ مَالُ اللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ»
✧ "Whoever picks up a found item, let him call to witness two just persons, then he should not conceal it or alter it. If its owner comes, he has more right to it; otherwise, it is God's wealth which He gives to whomever He wills."
سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ لَمْ تَعْرِفْ فَاعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ كُلْهَا فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا فَأَدِّهَا إِلَيْهِ»
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about found property. He said: "Announce it for a year. If you do not find its owner, note its covering and its tie, then consume it; if its owner comes, return it to him."
نَهَى عَنْ لُقَطَةِ الْحَاجِّ» قَالَ ابْنُ وَهْبٍ «وَلُقَطَةُ الْحَاجِّ يَتْرُكُهَا حَتَّى يَجِدَهَا صَاحِبُهَا»
✧ "He forbade picking up the lost property of pilgrims." Ibn Wahb said: "The lost property of pilgrims should be left until its owner finds it."
«مَنْ آوَى ضَالَّةً فَهُوَ ضَالٌّ مَا لَمْ يُعَرِّفْهَا»
✧ "Whoever shelters a stray animal is himself astray as long as he does not announce it."
جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنِ اللُّقَطَةِ فَقَالَ «اعْرِفْ عِفَاصَهَا وَوِكَاءَهَا ثُمَّ عَرِّفْهَا سَنَةً فَإِنْ جَاءَ صَاحِبُهَا وَإِلَّا فَشَأْنَكَ بِهَا» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْغَنَمِ قَالَ «هِيَ لَكَ أَوْ لِأَخِيكَ أَوْ لِلذِّئْبِ» قَالَ فَضَالَّةُ الْإِبِلِ قَالَ «مَا لَكَ وَلَهَا مَعَهَا سِقَاؤُهَا وَحِذَاؤُهَا تَرِدُ الْمَاءَ وَتَأْكُلُ الشَّجَرَ حَتَّى يَلْقَاهَا رَبُّهَا»

If its owner comes, give it to him; otherwise, do as you wish with it." He asked about stray sheep, and he said: "They are for you, or for your brother, or for the wolf." He asked about stray camels, and he said: "What do you have to do with them? They have their own water-skins and shoes; they drink water and eat trees until their owner meets them."
