20. Mercy
عَنْ عُمَرَ قَالَ لاَ يُرْحَمُ مَنْ لاَ يَرْحَمُ وَلاَ يُغْفَرُ لِمَنْ لاَ يَغْفِرُ وَلاَ يُتَابُ عَلَى مَنْ لاَ يَتُوبُ وَلاَ يُوقَّ مَنْ لا يُتَوَقَّ
✧ ʿUmar said, "Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. Whoever does not forgive will not be forgiven. Whoever does not repent will not be turned to. Whoever does not guard will not be guarded."
قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي لَأَذْبَحُ الشَّاةَ فَأَرْحَمُهَا أَوْ قَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرْحَمُ الشَّاةَ أَنْ أَذْبَحَهَا قَالَ وَالشَّاةُ إِنْ رَحِمْتَهَا رَحِمَكَ اللَّهُ مَرَّتَيْنِ
✧ A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I slaughter a sheep and I have mercy on it,' or he said, 'I have mercy on the sheep that I am about to slaughter.' He said, 'And the sheep — if you have mercy on it, Allah will have mercy on you,' twice.
سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ الصَّادِقَ الْمَصْدُوقَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لاَ تُنْزَعُ الرَّحْمَةُ إِلا مِنْ شَقِيٍّ
✧ I heard the Prophet ﷺ, the truthful, the believed, Abu al-Qasim ﷺ, say, 'Mercy is not removed except from a wretched person.'
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ مَنْ لا يَرْحَمُ النَّاسَ لا يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever does not have mercy on people, Allah will not have mercy on him.'
عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَرْحَمَ النَّاسِ بِالْعِيَالِ وَكَانَ لَهُ ابْنٌ مُسْتَرْضَعٌ فِي نَاحِيَةِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَكَانَ ظِئْرُهُ قَيْنًا وَكُنَّا نَأْتِيهِ وَقَدْ دَخَنَ الْبَيْتُ بِإِذْخِرٍ فَيُقَبِّلُهُ وَيَشُمُّهُ
✧ Anas b. Malik said, 'The Prophet ﷺ was the most merciful of people towards his family. He had a son who was being suckled in a part of Madinah, and his wet nurse was a blacksmith. We would go to him, and the house would be filled with smoke from idhkhir grass. He would kiss him and smell him.'
أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ وَمَعَهُ صَبِيٌّ، فَجَعَلَ يَضُمُّهُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: أَتَ...
"A man came to the Prophet ﷺ with a child which he began to embrace. The Prophet ﷺ said. 'Do you show mercy towards me?' 'Yes,' the man replied. He said, 'Allah is more merciful towards you than you are towards this child. He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.;:
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَمْشِي بِطَرِيقٍ اشْتَدَّ بِهِ الْعَطَشُ فَوَجَدَ بِئْرًا فَنَزَلَ فِيهَا فَشَرِبَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَإِذَا كَلْبٌ يَلْهَثُ يَأْكُلُ الثَّرَى مِنَ الْعَطَشِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ لَقَدْ بَلَغَ هَذَا الْكَلْبَ مِنَ الْعَطَشِ مِثْلُ الَّذِي كَانَ بَلَغَنِي فَنَزَلَ الْبِئْرَ فَمَلَأَ خُفَّاهُ ثُمَّ أَمْسَكَهَا بِفِيهِ فَسَقَى الْكَلْبَ فَشَكَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ فَغَفَرَ لَهُ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَإِنَّ لَنَا فِي الْبَهَائِمِ أَجْرًا؟ قَالَ فِي كُلِّ ذَاتِ كَبِدٍ رَطْبَةٍ أَجْرٌ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'While a man was walking along a road, he became very thirsty. He found a well, went down into it, drank, and then came out. Then he saw a dog panting and eating the moist earth out of thirst. The man said, "This dog has reached the same level of thirst that I had reached." So he went down into the well, filled his leather sock with water, held it in his mouth, and gave the dog water. Allah thanked him and forgave him.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for us in animals?' He said, 'In every living creature there is a reward.'
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ عُذِّبَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فِي هِرَّةٍ حَبَسَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ جُوعًا فَدَخَلَتِ فِيهَا النَّارَ يُقَالُ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ لاَ أَنْتِ أَطْعَمْتِيهَا وَلاَ سَقِيتِيهَا حِينَ حَبَسْتِيهَا وَلاَ أَنْتِ أَرْسَلْتِيهَا فَأَكَلَتْ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الأَرْضِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'A woman was punished on account of a cat. She imprisoned it until it died of hunger, and so she entered the Fire. It is said — and Allah knows best — "You neither fed it nor gave it water when you imprisoned it, nor did you release it so that it could eat the insects of the earth."'
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ ارْحَمُوا تُرْحَمُوا وَاغْفِرُوا يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَيْلٌ لأَقْمَاعِ الْقَوْلِ وَيْلٌ لِلْمُصِرِّينَ الَّذِينَ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ
✧ The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Have mercy and you will be shown mercy. Forgive and Allah will forgive you. Woe to the vessels that catch words. Woe to those who persist in what they do while they know.'
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ رَحِمَ وَلَوْ ذَبِيحَةً رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever has mercy, even on an animal to be slaughtered, Allah will have mercy on him on the Day of Resurrection.'
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلاً فَأَخَذَ رَجُلٌ بَيْضَ حُمَّرَةٍ فَجَاءَتْ تَرِفُّ عَلَى رَأْسِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ فَجَعَ هَذِهِ بِبَيْضَتِهَا؟ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنَا أَخَذْتُ بَيْضَتَهَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ ارْدُدْ رَحْمَةً لَهَا
✧ The Prophet ﷺ stopped at a place, and a man took the eggs of a small bird. The bird came and fluttered over the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'Which of you has distressed this one by taking its eggs?' A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I took its eggs.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Return them out of mercy for it.'
عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ قَالَ كَانَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ بِمَكَّةَ وَأَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ يَحْمِلُونَ الطَّيْرَ فِي الأَقْفَاصِ
✧ Hisham b. ʿUrwa said, 'Ibn al-Zubayr was in Makkah, and the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to carry birds in cages.'
عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَرَأَى ابْنًا لأَبِي طَلْحَةَ يُقَالُ لَهُ أَبُو عُمَيْرٍ وَكَانَ لَهُ نُغَيْرٌ يَلْعَبُ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ أَوْ أَيْنَ النُّغَيْرُ؟
✧ Anas said, 'The Prophet ﷺ entered and saw a son of Abu Talha called Abu ʿUmayr. He had a small bird with which he played. He said, "O Abu ʿUmayr, what happened to the small bird, or where is the small bird?"'
