✧ The martyrs are four: A man of excellent faith who meets the enemy and is true to Allah, fighting until he is killed – that is the one at whom people will raise their necks looking on the Day of Resurrection. A believer who meets the enemy and it is as if he is being struck with the thorns of the talh tree out of cowardice, then a stray arrow hits and kills him – that is in the second degree. A man who mixes a righteous deed with an evil one, meets the enemy and is true to Allah, fighting until he is killed – that is in the third degree. A man who was excessive against himself, meets the enemy and is true to Allah, fighting until he is killed – that is in the fourth degree.
