✧ Abu Bakr and Umar ؓ entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Among the traits of a hypocrite are: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he is entrusted he betrays." They left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ feeling heavy-hearted. Ali met them and said: "Why do I see you two heavy-hearted?" They said: "A hadith we heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'Among the traits of a hypocrite are: when he speaks he lies, when he is entrusted he betrays, and when he makes a promise he breaks it.'" Ali said: "Why did you not ask him?" They said: "We were in awe of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "But I will ask him." He entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "Abu Bakr and Umar met me, and they were heavy-hearted," then he mentioned what they had said. He ﷺ said: "I indeed told them that, but I did not put it in the place they put it. Rather, the hypocrite is the one who, when he speaks, tells himself that he is lying; when he promises, tells himself that he will break it; and when he is entrusted, tells himself that he will betray."
