✧ When ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl died, his son ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of God, my father has died, so pray over him.” The Messenger of God ﷺ stood, his companions stood with him, and I stood. When the Messenger of God ﷺ stood to pray over him, I stood facing him and said, “O Messenger of God, will you pray over the enemy of God, who on such-and-such a day said such-and-such, and on such-and-such a day said such-and-such?” enumerating his odious days. When I persisted, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Leave me, ʿUmar, for I have been given the choice: ‘Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them.’ If I knew that by adding to the seventy times they would be forgiven, I would have done so.” He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed, then stood at his grave. He said: I marveled at my boldness toward the Messenger of God ﷺ, and it was not long until the verse came down: “And do not ever pray over any of them who dies, and do not stand at his grave.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ never prayed over any of them, nor did he stand at his grave.
