✧ ʿUmar used to grant permission to the people of Badr, and he granted permission to me along with them. Some of them said, “Do you grant permission to this youth along with us, while among our own sons there are those like him?” ʿUmar said, “He is among those whom you know.” One day he granted them permission, and granted me permission along with them, and he asked them about this sūrah: “When the victory of God and the conquest comes.” They said, “God, mighty and majestic, commanded His Prophet, when God grants victory, to seek forgiveness and turn in repentance to Him.” He said, “What do you say, O Ibn ʿAbbās?” I said, “It is not like that; rather, He informed His Prophet of the imminence of his term. He said: ‘When the victory of God and the conquest comes’ — the conquest of Makkah — ‘and you see the people entering the religion of God in multitudes,’ that is a sign of your death, ‘so glorify with praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed He is ever-accepting of repentance.'” ʿUmar said to them, “How can you censure me regarding him after what you have seen?”
