✧ Umar sat in a place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to sit, with funeral processions passing by him. He said: A funeral passed by, and they praised it highly, so he said: “It is affirmed.” Then another funeral passed by, and they praised it highly, so he said: “It is affirmed.” Then another funeral passed by, and they said good things, so he said: “It is affirmed.” Then another funeral passed by, and they said: “This was the most dishonest of people.” He said: “The most dishonest of people is the one who lies most against Allah, then those next to them who lie against their own soul in their body.” They said: “What if four testify?” He said: “It is affirmed.” [They said: “And three?” He said: “And three,” and he said: “It is affirmed.”] They said: “And two?” He said: “It is affirmed, and if I had said one, that would be dearer to me than red camels.” He said: It was said to Umar: “Is this something you say by your own opinion, or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said: “No, rather I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt, who is trustworthy (thiqah), narrated it from Ibn Buraydah, and there is disagreement about Dāwūd as well. Yaʿqūb al-Ḥaḍramī said, from him, from Ibn Buraydah, from Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar, from Abū al-Aswad. He erred in mentioning Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar in its chain, because of the many trustworthy memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) who contradicted him from Dāwūd, among them ʿAffān b. Muslim, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith, Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb, Yūnus b. Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, Shaybān b. Farrūkh and others. They narrated it from Dāwūd, from Ibn Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, without mentioning anyone between the two. Likewise Saʿīd b. Razīn narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, like the narration of the group from Dāwūd. ʿUmar b. al-Walīd al-Shannī narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah as a mursal report from ʿUmar, without mentioning anyone between them. The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version of this is what ʿAffān and those who followed him narrated from Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt.
