✧ I was sitting with Aisha when a woman from the Ansar entered and said: 'May Allah do such-and-such to so-and-so' – meaning her son. I said to her: 'What is that?' She said: 'My son was among those who spread the slander.' I said to her: 'What is the slander?' She said: 'Such-and-such.' Aisha said: 'Did Abu Bakr hear of that?' She said: 'Yes.' She said: 'Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hear of that?' She said: 'Yes.' Then she fell – or collapsed – unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she had a fever with chills, so I threw clothes over her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and said: 'What is wrong with her?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a fever with chills has taken her.' He said: 'Perhaps it is because of the slander that was spoken!' I said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' Aisha raised her head and said: 'If I speak, you will not excuse me, and if I swear, you will not believe me. My likeness and yours is like Jacob and his sons when he said: So patience is most fitting, and Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe.' When her exoneration came down, the Prophet ﷺ came to her and told her of it. She said: 'Praise be to Allah, not to you' – or she said: 'and not to anyone.'
