✧ While I was with Aisha, a woman from the Ansar entered upon us and said: 'May Allah do to her son such-and-such and such-and-such.' Aisha said: 'Why?' She said: 'He was among those who spread the slander.' Aisha said: 'What slander?' She said: 'Such-and-such.' She said: 'Has that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'Yes.' 'And Abu Bakr?' She said: 'Yes.' Then Aisha fell down unconscious and did not regain consciousness except with a fever with chills. I got up and covered her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and said: 'What is the matter with her?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a fever with chills has taken her.' He said: 'Perhaps it is because of a slander that was spoken!' Aisha sat up straight for him and said: 'By Allah, if I swear to you, you will not believe me, and if I offer an excuse to you, you will not excuse me. My likeness and yours is like Jacob and his sons: And Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out. Allah sent down her exoneration, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned with Abu Bakr and entered. He said: 'O Aisha, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has sent down your exoneration.' She said: 'Praise be to Allah, not to you.' Abu Bakr said to her: 'Do you say this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' She said: 'Yes.' Among those who spread the slander was a man whom Abu Bakr supported, and Abu Bakr swore not to give him anything. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: 'Let not those of virtue and means among you swear not to give...' to the end of the verse. Abu Bakr said: 'Yes, indeed,' and gave him.
