حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ بْنُ يُونُسَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى الثَّعْلَبِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى قَالَكُنْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلالَ هِلالَ شَوَّالٍ فَقَالَ
كُنْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ فَأَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ، هِلَالَ شَوَّالٍ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، أَفْطِرُوا، ثُمَّ قَامَ إِلَى عُسٍّ فِيهِ مَاءٌ، فَتَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ، فَقَالَ [لَهُ] الرَّجُلُ: وَاللهِ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مَا أَتَيْتُكَ إِلَّا لِأَسْأَلَكَ عَنْ هَذَا، أَفَرَأَيْتَ غَيْرَكَ فَعَلَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ خَيْرًا مِنِّي، وَخَيْرَ الْأُمَّةِ، رَأَيْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ فَعَلَ مِثْلَ الَّذِي فَعَلْتُ، وَعَلَيْهِ جُبَّةٌ شَامِيَّةٌ ضَيِّقَةُ الْكُمَّيْنِ، فَأَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْجُبَّةِ، ثُمَّ صَلَّى عُمَرُ الْمَغْرِبَ.

✧ I was with Umar when a man came to him and said: I have seen the new moon, the new moon of Shawwal. Umar said: O people, break your fast. Then he went to a large wooden cup containing water, performed ablution, and wiped over his leather socks. The man said to him: By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, I came to you only to ask you about this. Have you seen anyone other than you do it? He said: Yes, one better than me and the best of the community. I saw Abu al-Qasim ﷺ do the same as I did, wearing a Syrian robe with tight sleeves, and he inserted his hand from beneath the robe. Then Umar prayed Maghrib.

machine translationMuḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Abū Nuʿaym, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He said, "I do not know." Muḥammad b. ʿAlī said: I asked Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, "Did Ibn Abī Laylā hear from ʿUmar?" He did not confirm that. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who is Ibn ʿĀmir al-Thaʿlabī, others are more reliable (athbat) than him, and the ḥadīth of Abū Wāʾil from ʿUmar is sounder (aṣaḥḥ) in its chain than his. It was narrated by al-Aʿmash and Manṣūr from Abū Wāʾil.
