✧ I was a man who sought out the authorities, so my father seized me and imprisoned me — Mubarak said: and I do not think he said anything except: and he shackled me — then he said to me: By God, you will not leave until you have memorized the Book of God. So I memorized the Book of God, and God benefited me through it, and the world left me, and I began to dislike marrying and doing things. So I entered upon Aisha and said: Sa'd b. Hisham b. Amir. She said: May God have mercy on Amir; he was struck down on the day of Uhud as a martyr. He said: I said: O Mother of the Believers, I want to become celibate, so I came to ask you about that. She said: O Hisham, do not become celibate, for God said: 'Indeed in the Messenger of God you have a good example,' and the Messenger of God ﷺ married and had children. He said: I said: O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: O my son, do you not recite the Quran? God said: 'And indeed you are upon a great character.' The character of Muhammad is the Quran. He said: I said: O Mother of the Believers, tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ. She said: O my son, who can endure the prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ? The Messenger of God ﷺ, when he prayed, prayed two rak'ahs, then slept a short sleep, then got up and prayed two rak'ahs, and two, and two, and two, and two, and one — or she said: he prayed two, and two, and two, and two, and one — a prayer after Isha of nine rak'ahs, and eleven. When the Messenger of God ﷺ became heavy and his flesh increased, he prayed two, and two, and one, and prayed two rak'ahs sitting.
