✧ Eleven women gathered and made a pact and covenant not to conceal anything about their husbands. The first said: “My husband is the flesh of a lean camel on top of a mountain, not easy to climb, nor fat to be carried down.” The second said: “My husband, I will not spread his news. I fear I cannot leave him. If I mention him, I mention his visible and hidden faults.” The third said: “My husband is tall and thin. If I am silent, I remain suspended; if I speak, I am divorced.” The fourth said: “My husband is like the night of Tihamah, neither hot nor cold, and there is no fear or boredom with him.” The fifth said: “My husband, when he eats, he devours; when he drinks, he gulps; when he sleeps, he wraps himself up, and he does not extend his hand to know my grief.” The sixth said: “My husband is inept—or impotent, ‘Isa was uncertain—utterly incompetent. Every ailment is his ailment. He may crack your skull or break your bone, or do both to you.” The seventh said: “My husband, when he enters, he is like a lion; when he leaves, he is like a leopard, and he does not ask about what he entrusted.” The eighth said: “My husband’s touch is the touch of a rabbit, and his scent is the scent of carnation.” The ninth said: “My husband is lofty in stature, long in sword-belt, great in ash, and his house is near the assembly.” The tenth said: “My husband is Malik, and what is Malik? He is better than that. He has camels that are few in pastures but many in resting places. When they hear the sound of the lute, they are certain that they are doomed.” The eleventh said: “My husband is Abu Zar‘, and what is Abu Zar‘? He adorned my ears with jewelry, filled my upper arms with fat, and made me happy, so I became pleased with myself. He found me among people of a small flock in a rugged place, and he placed me among people of neighing, creaking, threshing, and winnowing. With him I speak and am not rebuked; I sleep and wake late; I drink and quench my thirst. The mother of Abu Zar‘, and what is the mother of Abu Zar‘? Her bundles are ample, and her house is spacious. The son of Abu Zar‘, and what is the son of Abu Zar‘? His bed is like a drawn sword, and the foreleg of a young goat satisfies him. The daughter of Abu Zar‘, and what is the daughter of Abu Zar‘? She is obedient to her father, obedient to her mother, fills her garment, and is the envy of her neighbor. The slave girl of Abu Zar‘, and what is the slave girl of Abu Zar‘? She does not spread our talk, does not scatter our provisions, and does not fill our house with clutter. Abu Zar‘ went out when the skins were being churned, and he met a woman with two sons like leopards playing beneath her waist with two pomegranates. He divorced me and married her. After him I married a noble man who rode a fine horse and took a spear, and he brought me abundant livestock. He said: ‘Eat, Umm Zar‘, and give to your family.’ She said: ‘If I gathered everything he gave me, it would not reach the smallest vessel of Abu Zar‘.’” ‘A’ishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: “O ‘A’ish, I am to you as Abu Zar‘ was to Umm Zar‘.”
