حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتِ:
اشْتَرَيْتُ بَرِيرَةَ لِأُعْتِقَهَا، فَاشْتَرَطَ أَهْلُهَا وَلَاءَهَا، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: أَعْتِقِيهَا، فَإِنَّ الْوَلَاءَ لِمَنْ أَعْتَقَ، وَكَانَ زَوْجُهَا حُرًّا وَهِيَ مَمْلُوكَةٌ، فَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ I purchased Barīrah to manumit her, but her owners stipulated the right of walāʾ for themselves. I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: “Manumit her, for walāʾ belongs to the one who frees.” Her husband was a free man while she was a slave, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice.
