machine translationʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr narrated this ḥadīth from ʿĀʾishah, and there is disagreement about its wording from him. Hishām b. ʿUrwah narrated it from his father from ʿĀʾishah that the Prophet ﷺ said to her: "Take her and stipulate the walāʾ for them." It was narrated from Hishām in this way by Mālik, Ibn Jurayj, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Layth b. Saʿd, ʿAlī b. Mushir, ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr, Shujāʿ b. al-Walīd, Mālik b. Saʿīr, Saʿīd b. Yaḥyā al-Lakhmī, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muslim al-Qasmalī, Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah, Wuhayb, Abū Usāmah, Muḥāḍir and Ibn Abī Laylā, from Hishām. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated it from Hishām and mentioned it in full, and added to what they had a fine wording, saying in it: "Her husband was a slave, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her the choice, and had he been free he would not have given her the choice." Jarīr is among the trustworthy memorizers. Abū l-Zinād narrated it from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah in agreement with the narration of Hishām, and said in it: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Buy her and stipulate the walāʾ for them, for the walāʾ belongs to the one who frees." Abū l-Zubayr al-Makkī narrated it from ʿUrwah, having heard it from him, and said in it: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, they refused to sell her to me unless the walāʾ is theirs." He said: "Let that not stop you, for the walāʾ belongs to the one who frees." He did not say "and stipulate the walāʾ for them." Al-Zuhrī likewise narrated it from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah. Ḥātim b. Ismāʿīl, ʿAbdah b. Sulaymān, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Ḥāzim and Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr narrated this ḥadīth from Hishām b. ʿUrwah from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim from his father from ʿĀʾishah, and added in it that her husband was a slave. Likewise Abū l-Zinād narrated it from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah that when Barīrah was freed she was married to an owned slave. Likewise Yaḥyā b. ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr narrated it from his father from ʿĀʾishah that her husband was a slave called Mughīth [sic: Miqsam]. Likewise Yazīd b. Rūmān said, from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah. Likewise Muḥammad b. Isḥāq narrated it from al-Zuhrī and Hishām b. ʿUrwah from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah that she was married to a slave until she was freed. Usāmah b. Zayd narrated it, and there is disagreement about him: Ḥātim b. Ismāʿīl and ʿAbdullāh b. Mūsā al-Taymī narrated it from Usāmah from al-Zuhrī from al-Qāsim from ʿĀʾishah that Barīrah's husband was owned. Wakīʿ and ʿUthmān b. ʿUmar contradicted them and narrated it from Usāmah b. Zayd from al-Qāsim from his father from ʿĀʾishah. All of these said in their ḥadīths that Barīrah's husband was a slave. Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī narrated this ḥadīth from al-Aswad from ʿĀʾishah, and contradicted those we mentioned before, saying in it that Barīrah's husband was free. There is disagreement about Ibrāhīm: Manṣūr, al-Aʿmash and Abū Maʿshar Ziyād b. Kulayb narrated it from Ibrāhīm from al-Aswad from ʿĀʾishah. There is disagreement about Abū Maʿshar: al-Sahmī said, from Saʿīd, from Abū Maʿshar, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad and ʿAlqamah, from ʿĀʾishah, while others narrate it from Saʿīd without mentioning ʿAlqamah. Shuʿbah narrated it from Abū Maʿshar from Ibrāhīm from ʿĀʾishah as a mursal report, and this is strange (gharīb) from Shuʿbah. There is disagreement about Shuʿbah: it was narrated from Muḥammad b. [unclear] from Shuʿbah from ʿAmr b. Murrah from Ibrāhīm, but the companions of Shuʿbah contradicted him and narrated it from Shuʿbah from Manṣūr from Ibrāhīm, and this is correct. ʿImrān b. Ḥudayr narrated this ḥadīth from ʿIkrimah from ʿĀʾishah and said in it that her husband was free. But the Hijazis know the ḥadīth better.
