✧ For a boy, two sheep of equal age are slaughtered as ʿaqīqah; for a girl, one sheep. ʿĀʾishah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered two sheep for each of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn on the seventh day, and commanded that the filth be removed from the child’s head. He said: “Slaughter in his name, and say: ‘In the name of Allah; Allah is most great. O Allah, from You and to You; this is the ʿaqīqah of so-and-so.’” He said: In the Jāhiliyyah, a piece of cotton would be taken and dipped in the blood of the ʿaqīqah, then placed on the child’s head. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that they put perfume in place of the blood.
