✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me, al-Miqdad, and al-Zubayr to the meadow of Khakh, and he said: “There is a woman there who has a letter with her.” He said: We went out, our horses racing with us, and we came upon the woman. We said: “You will bring out the letter or we will search your clothes.” He said: She brought out a letter from the plaits of her hair, and in it was a message from Hatib b. Abi Balta‘ah to the people of Makkah, informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said: “What is this, O Hatib?” He said: “O Messenger of God, I did not write it as an apostasy from my religion,” and he made an excuse by something—its meaning was that he was a stranger there or something like this. ‘Umar said: “O Messenger of God, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite.” He said: “And what will make you know, O ‘Umar? Perhaps God has looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you.’”
