✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ intended to go to Makkah, he sent word to some of his companions that he intended Makkah, among them Hatib b. Abi Balta'a, and it spread among the people that he intended Hunayn. He said: Hatib wrote to the people of Makkah that the Messenger of God ﷺ intends you. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ was informed of it. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me and Abu Marthad, and there was no man with us but had a horse. He said: Go to the meadow of Khakh, for you will meet a woman there with a letter. Take it from her. He said: We went until we saw her at the place the Messenger of God ﷺ mentioned. We said to her: Hand over the letter. She said: I have no letter with me. He said: We put down her baggage and searched her, and we did not find it in her baggage. Abu Marthad said: Perhaps she does not have a letter with her. We said: The Messenger of God ﷺ did not lie, nor did we. We said to her: You will bring it out or we will strip you. She said: Do you not fear God? Are you not Muslims? We said: You will bring it out or we will strip you. Amr b. Murra said: She brought it out from her waistband—and Habib b. Abi Thabit said: She brought it out from her front. We came to the Prophet ﷺ, and the letter was from Hatib b. Abi Balta'a. Umar stood up and said: O Messenger of God, he has betrayed God and betrayed His Messenger. Give me permission to strike his neck. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Did he not witness Badr? They said: Yes, O Messenger of God. Umar said: Yes, but he has broken his oath and aided your enemies against you. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Perhaps God has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish. Umar's eyes overflowed, and he said: God and His Messenger know best. The Messenger of God ﷺ sent for Hatib and said: What made you do what you did? He said: O Messenger of God, I was a man attached to Quraysh, and my family and property were there. There is no one among your companions but has in Makkah someone to protect his family and property. So I wrote to them about that. By God, O Messenger of God, I am a believer in God and His Messenger. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Hatib has spoken the truth, so say nothing to Hatib but good. Habib said: Then God revealed: O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, offering them affection.
