✧ He ascended the pulpit on Friday and delivered a sermon. Then al-Ash‘ath stood up to him and said: “This fair-skinned woman has prevailed over us in regard to you.” He said: “Who will excuse me from these sluggish men? One of them stays behind, tossing on his cushions, while these others hasten to the remembrance of God. If I were to drive them away, I would indeed be among the wrongdoers. By God, I heard him say: ‘They will certainly strike you back onto the religion, just as you struck them onto it at first.’”

machine translationAbū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr narrates it from al-Aʿmash, from al-Minhāl b. ʿAmr, from ʿAbbād b. ʿAbdillāh al-Asadī, from ʿAlī as a statement of his own (mawqūf). Abū ʿAwānah and Yaḥyā b. ʿĪsā al-Ramlī raised it to the Prophet (marfūʿ) from al-Aʿmash. Sharīk narrated it from al-Aʿmash and inclined toward raising it, but did not state it explicitly.
