✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah while ʿAbdullāh b. Salām was in his palm grove. When he heard of him, he came and said: “I will ask you about things that no one knows except a prophet. If you tell me them, then you are the Messenger of Allah.” He asked him about resemblance, about the first thing with which people will be gathered, and about the first thing the people of Paradise will eat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Gabriel told me them just now.” He said: “That is the enemy of the Jews.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “As for resemblance, if the man’s fluid precedes the woman’s fluid, the child resembles him, and if the woman’s fluid precedes the man’s fluid, the child resembles her. The first thing with which people will be gathered is a fire that comes from the east and gathers the people to the west. The first thing the people of Paradise will eat is the extra lobe of a fish’s liver.” So ʿAbdullāh b. Salām believed. He said: “O Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a slanderous people, and if they hear of my Islam they will slander me and speak ill of me. So hide me and send for them and ask them about me.” So he sent for them and they came—while he hid him—and he said: “What kind of man is ʿAbdullāh b. Salām among you?” They said: “The best of us and the son of the best of us, our master and the son of our master, our scholar and the son of our scholar.” He said: “Do you think that if he believes, you will believe?” They said: “May Allah protect him from that.” He said: “Come out to them, O Ibn Salām.” So he came out and said: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah.” They said: “Rather, he is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us, our ignorant one and the son of our ignorant one.” He said: “Did I not tell you, O Messenger of Allah, that they are a slanderous people?”
