✧ A man came to Umar while he was at Arafah and said: Amir al-Mu'minin, I came from Kufah and left there someone who writes out copies of the Quran from memory. Umar became angry and swelled until he almost filled the space between the man's shoulders. He said: Woe to you, who is he? He said: Abdullah b. Masud. He kept calming down until he returned to his former state. Then he said: Woe to you, by Allah, I do not know of any Muslim remaining who is more deserving of that than him. I will tell you about that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to converse at night about affairs of the Muslims at Abu Bakr's house. One night he conversed there and I was with him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left and we walked with him. There was a man standing praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood listening to his recitation. When we could not identify the man, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever would like to recite the Quran as it was sent down, let him recite it as Ibn Umm Abd does.' Then the man sat down supplicating, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: 'Ask and you will be given.' Umar said: I said: By Allah, I will go to him in the morning and give him good news. I went to him to give him good news and found Abu Bakr had preceded me and given him the news. By Allah, I never raced him to any good but he preceded me.
