✧ He came to Umar and said: 'I have come, O Commander of the Faithful, from Kufa, and I left there a man who dictates copies of the Quran from memory.' Umar became angry and swelled until he nearly filled the space between the two sides of the saddle. He said, 'Who is he, woe to you?!' He said, 'Abd Allah b. Mas'ud.' He kept calming down and composing himself until he returned to his former state. Then he said, 'Woe to you, by Allah I do not know of anyone remaining among the people who is more deserving of that than him. I will tell you about that: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to converse at night with Abu Bakr about some matter concerning the Muslims. One night he conversed with him, and I was with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and we went out with him. There was a man standing praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood listening to his recitation. When we were about to recognize him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever would like to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd." Then the man sat down supplicating, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began saying to him, "Ask and you will be given; ask and you will be given." Umar said, "I said: By Allah, I will go to him in the morning and give him glad tidings." He said, "So I went to him in the morning to give him glad tidings, but I found that Abu Bakr had preceded me to him and given him the glad tidings. By Allah, I never raced him to any good but he preceded me to it."
