حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ:
خَرَجَ مَرْحَبُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ الْيَهُودِيُّ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: قَدْ عَلِمَتْ خَيْبَرُ أَنِّي مَرْحَبُ شَاكِي السِّلَاحِ بَطَلٌ مُجَرَّبُ أَطْعَنُ أَحْيَانًا وَحِينًا أَضْرِبُ إِذَا اللُّيُوثُ أَقْبَلَتْ تَلَهَّبُ وَأَحْجَمَتْ عَنْ صَوْلَةِ الْمُجَرِّبِ كَانَ حِمَايَ الْحِمَى لَا يُقْرَبُ هَلْ مِنْ مُبَارِزٍ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: مَنْ لِهَذَا ؟ قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ: أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَنَا وَاللهِ الْمَوْتُورُ الثَّائِرُ، قَتَلُوا أَخِي بِالْأَمْسِ، فَقَالَ: قُمْ إِلَيْهِ، اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنْهُ. فَلَمَّا دَنَا أَحَدُهُمَا مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ عَرَضَتْ بَيْنَهُمَا شَجَرَةٌ، فَطَفِقَ أَحَدُهُمَا يَلُوذُ بِهَا مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ، فَكُلَّمَا لَاذَ بِهَا مِنْهُ اقْتَطَعَ بِسَيْفِهِ مَا دُونَهُ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُهَا وَإِنَّهَا كَالرَّجُلِ الْقَائِمِ حَتَّى خَلُصَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا إِلَى صَاحِبِهِ، فَشَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَرْحَبٌ فَضَرَبَهُ وَاتَّقَاهُ بِالدَّرَقَةِ، فَوَقَعَ سَيْفُهُ فِيهَا فَنَشَبَ، وَعَضَّتْ لَهُ الدَّرَقَةُ فَأَمْسَكَتْهُ، فَضَرَبَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ فَقَتَلَهُ

✧ Marhab b. al-Harith the Jew came out saying: Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with weapons, a tested hero. Sometimes I thrust, and sometimes I strike, when lions advance, they blaze. The tested one is protected from attack; my protection is the sanctuary that is not approached. Is there any challenger? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Who will face this? Muhammad b. Maslama said: I, O Messenger of God, by God, I am the one bereaved and seeking revenge; they killed my brother yesterday. He said: Arise to him, O God, help him. When one of them approached the other, a tree appeared between them, and one of them began to take refuge behind it from the other. Whenever he took refuge behind it, he cut with his sword what was before him until I saw it like a standing man, until each of them reached the other. Marhab charged at him and struck him, but he defended with his shield, and his sword fell into it and stuck, and the shield held it fast. Then Muhammad b. Maslama struck him and killed him.
