Muḥammad b. Maslamah struck both of Marḥab's legs and cut them off. Marḥab said: "Finish me off, O Muḥammad!" Muḥammad said: "Taste death as my brother Maḥmūd tasted it," and he passed him by. Then ʿAlī ؓ passed by him, struck his neck, and took his spoils. The two of them disputed before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ over his spoils. Muḥammad said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I did not cut off his legs and leave him except so that he would taste death, and I was able to finish him off." ʿAlī ؓ said: "He has spoken the truth. I struck his neck after he had cut off his legs." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave his spoils to Muḥammad b. Maslamah: his sword, his coat of mail, his helmet, and his head-armor. The family of Muḥammad b. Maslamah had his sword, on which there was an inscription that no one knew what it was, until a Jew from the Jews of Taymāʾ read it, and it said: "This is the sword of Marḥab; whoever tastes it will perish."
