✧ Marhab the Jew came out of their fortress having gathered his weapons, reciting war poetry and saying: 'Khaybar knows that I am Marhab, armed with sharp weapons, a tried hero. I thrust sometimes, and at times I strike, when lions advance blazing. My protected death was not to be approached.' And he was saying, 'Who will duel?' The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Who will face this one?' Muhammad b. Maslama said, 'I will face him, O Messenger of God. By God, I am the bereaved avenger; they killed my brother yesterday.' He said, 'Arise against him. O God, help him against him.' When one of them drew near to the other, an 'umri tree of the 'ushar kind came between them, and one of them began to take refuge behind it from his opponent. Whenever he took refuge from him, he cut away with his sword what was in front of him until each of them emerged to face his opponent, and it became between them like a standing man with no branches. Then Marhab charged at Muhammad and struck him, but Muhammad met it with his shield. His sword fell into the shield and stuck in it, holding it fast, and Muhammad b. Maslama struck him until he killed him.
