✧ Quraysh gathered to the Prophet ﷺ one day and said, "Look for the most knowledgeable among you in sorcery, divination, and poetry, and let him go to this man who has divided our assembly, scattered our affairs, and defamed our religion. Let him speak to him and see how he responds." They said, "We know no one but Utbah b. Rabiah." They said, "You, Abu al-Walid." So Utbah went to him and said, "O Muhammad, are you better or Abdullah?" The Messenger of God remained silent. Then he said, "Are you better or Abd al-Muttalib?" The Messenger of God ﷺ remained silent. He said, "If you claim that these are better than you, then they worshipped the deities you have defamed. If you claim that you are better than them, then speak so that we may hear your words. By God, we have never seen a young lamb more ill-omened upon your people than you. You have divided our assembly, scattered our affairs, and defamed our religion, and you have disgraced us among the Arabs, until it has spread among them that there is a sorcerer in Quraysh and a diviner in Quraysh. By God, we are only waiting for a cry like that of a pregnant woman before some of us rise against others with swords until we perish. O man, if it is need that drives you, we will gather for you until you become the richest man of Quraysh. If it is marriage, then choose any of the women of Quraysh you wish, and we will marry you to ten." The Messenger of God said to him, "Have you finished?" He said, "Yes." Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Ha Mim. A revelation from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," until he reached: "But if they turn away, then say: I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of Ad and Thamud." Utbah said, "Enough, enough! Do you have anything other than this?" He said, "No." He returned to Quraysh, and they said, "What is behind you?" He said, "I left nothing that I thought you would speak to him about except that I spoke to him about it." They said, "Did he answer you?" He said, "Yes. By the One who erected it as a building, I understood nothing of what he said except that he said, 'I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of Ad and Thamud.'" They said, "Woe to you! A man speaks to you in Arabic and you do not know what he said?" He said, "No, by God, I understood nothing of what he said except the mention of the thunderbolt."
