Quraysh gathered one day and said: "Look for the one among you who knows most about sorcery, divination and poetry, and let him go to this man who has split our community, scattered our affairs and found fault with our religion, so he can speak to him and see what he replies." They said: "We know no one but ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah." They said: "You, Abū al-Walīd." So ʿUtbah came to him and said: "O Muḥammad, are you better, or ʿAbdullāh?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent. Then he said: "Are you better, or ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was silent. He said: "If you claim that these were better than you, then they worshipped the gods you have found fault with. And if you claim that you are better than them, then speak so that we may hear your words. By Allah, we have never seen a lamb more ill-omened for its people than you. You have split our community, scattered our affairs, found fault with our religion, and disgraced us among the Arabs, until word has spread among them that in Quraysh there is a sorcerer and that in Quraysh there is a diviner. By Allah, we are waiting for nothing but something like the cry of a pregnant woman, that some of us rise against others with swords until we destroy one another. O man, if what drives you is the desire for marriage, choose whichever women of Quraysh you wish and we will marry you to ten. And if what drives you is need, we will gather wealth for you until you are the richest man in Quraysh." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Have you finished?" He said: "Yes." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Then ʿUtbah said [to him]: "Enough, enough! Do you have nothing else?" He said: "No." So he returned to Quraysh, and they said: "What have you got?" He said: "I left nothing that I thought you would say to him except that I said it to him." They said: "Did he answer you?" He said: "Yes." Then he said: "No, by the One who set up this edifice, I understood nothing of what he said, except that he warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of ʿĀd and Thamūd!" They said: "Woe to you! A man speaks to you in Arabic and you do not know what he said!" He said: "No, by Allah, I understood nothing of what he said except the mention of the thunderbolt!"
