✧ Recognition of the Signs of Prophethood by the Ancients

[1] قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنِ الْأَجْلَحِ، عَنِ الذَّيَّالِ بْنِ حَرْمَلَةَ الْأَسَدِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ؓ، قَالَ:

اجْتَمَعَتْ قُرَيْشٌ يَوْمًا، فَقَالُوا: انْظُرُوا أَعْلَمَكُمْ بِالسِّحْرِ وَالْكَهَانَةِ وَالشِّعْرِ، فَلْيَأْتِ هَذَا الرَّجُلَ الَّذِي قَدْ فَرَّقَ جَمَاعَتَنَا، وَشَتَّتَ أَمْرَنَا، وَعَابَ دِينَنَا، فَلْيُكَلِّمْهُ وَلْيَنْظُرْ مَاذَا يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالُوا: مَا نَعْرِفُ أَحَدًا غَيْرَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، فَقَالُوا: أَنْتَ يَا أَبَا الْوَلِيدِ، فَأَتَاهُ عُتْبَةُ فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، أَنْتَ خَيْرٌ أَمْ عَبْدُ اللهِ ؟ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: إِنْ كُنْتَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ، فَقَدْ عَبَدُوا الْآلِهَةَ الَّتِي عِبْتَ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُمْ فَتَكَلَّمْ حَتَّى نَسْمَعَ قَوْلَكَ، أَمَا وَاللهِ مَا رَأَيْنَا سَخْلَةً قَطُّ أَشْأَمَ عَلَى قَوْمِكَ مِنْكَ، فَرَّقْتَ شَمْلَنَا، وَشَتَّتَّ أَمْرَنَا، وَعِبْتَ دِينَنَا، وَفَضَحْتَنَا فِي الْعَرَبِ، حَتَّى لَقَدْ طَارَ فِيهِمْ أَنَّ فِي قُرَيْشٍ سَاحِرًا، وَأَنَّ فِي قُرَيْشٍ كَاهِنًا، وَاللهِ مَا نَنْتَظِرُ إِلَّا مِثْلَ صَيْحَةِ الْحُبْلَى أَنْ يَقْدَمَ بَعْضُنَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ بِالسُّيُوفِ حَتَّى نَتَفَانَى، أَيُّهَا الرَّجُلُ، إِنْ كَانَ إِنَّمَا بِكَ الْحَاجَةُ جَمَعْنَا لَكَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَغْنَى قُرَيْشٍ رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا، وَإِنْ كَانَ إِنَّمَا بِكَ الْبَاءَةُ فَاخْتَرْ أَيَّ نِسَاءِ قُرَيْشٍ شِئْتَ فَلْنُزَوِّجْكَ عَشْرًا، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَفَرَغْتَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ حم تَنْـزِيلٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، حَتَّى بَلَغَ: فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَقُلْ أَنْذَرْتُكُمْ صَاعِقَةً مِثْلَ صَاعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَثَمُودَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُتْبَةُ: حَسْبُكَ، حَسْبُكَ، مَا عِنْدَكَ غَيْرُ هَذَا ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: لَا، فَرَجَعَ إِلَى قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالُوا: مَا وَرَاءَكَ ؟ قَالَ: مَا تَرَكْتُ شَيْئًا أَرَى أَنَّكُمْ تُكَلِّمُونَهُ بِهِ إِلَّا قَدْ كَلَّمْتُهُ بِهِ، قَالُوا: فَهَلْ أَجَابَكَ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: وَالَّذِي نَصَبَهَا بَنِيَّةً، مَا فَهِمْتُ شَيْئًا مِمَّا قَالَ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ أَنْذَرَكُمْ صَاعِقَةً مِثْلَ صَاعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَثَمُودَ، قَالُوا: وَيْلَكَ، يُكَلِّمُكَ رَجُلٌ بِالْعَرَبِيَّةِ لَا تَدْرِي مَا قَالَ ؟ قَالَ: لَا وَاللهِ، مَا فَهِمْتُ شَيْئًا مِمَّا قَالَ غَيْرَ ذِكْرِ الصَّاعِقَةِ

✧ Quraysh gathered one day and said: "Look for the most knowledgeable among you in sorcery, divination, and poetry; let him go to this man who has divided our assembly, scattered our affairs, and criticized our religion. Let him speak with him and see what he replies." They said: "We know no one other than 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah." They said: "You, O Abu al-Walid." So 'Utbah came to him and said: "O Muhammad, are you better or 'Abd Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. He said: "If you claim that these [forefathers] are better than you, they indeed worshipped the deities that you have criticized. And if you claim that you are better than them, then speak so that we may hear your words. By Allah, we have never seen a young lamb more ill-omened for your people than you. You have divided our unity, scattered our affairs, criticized our religion, and disgraced us among the Arabs, until it has spread among them that there is a sorcerer in Quraysh and a soothsayer in Quraysh. By Allah, we await only a cry like that of a pregnant woman [about to miscarry], that some of us will fall upon others with swords until we annihilate each other. O man, if it is need that drives you, we will gather for you until you become the richest single man of Quraysh. And if it is marriage you desire, then choose whichever women of Quraysh you wish, and we will marry you to ten." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Have you finished?" He said: "Yes." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Ha Mim. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing." He continued until he reached: "But if they turn away, then say: I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of 'Ad and Thamud." 'Utbah said to him: "Enough, enough! Do you have anything other than this?" He ﷺ said: "No." He returned to Quraysh, and they said: "What news do you bring?" He said: "I did not leave anything that I thought you would say to him except that I said it to him." They said: "Did he answer you?" He said: "Yes." He said: "By the One who erected it as a building, I understood nothing of what he said except that he warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt of 'Ad and Thamud." They said: "Woe to you! A man speaks to you in Arabic and you do not know what he said?" He said: "No, by Allah, I understood nothing of what he said except the mention of the thunderbolt."
