Translation

✧ A daughter of 'Uthman b. 'Affan died in Makkah, and we came to attend her funeral—or he said: we came to be present at it. Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas attended. He said: I was sitting between them—I sat next to one of them, then the other came and sat beside me. 'Abdullah b. 'Umar said to 'Amr b. 'Uthman, facing him, 'Will you not forbid the weeping? For the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Indeed, the deceased is punished by the weeping of his family over him."' Ibn 'Abbas said, 'Umar used to say some of that. Then he narrated, saying: I returned from Makkah with 'Umar, and when we were at al-Bayda', he saw a group of riders under the shade of a tree. He said, 'Go and see who these riders are.' I looked and found it was Suhayb, and I informed him. He said, 'Call him for me.' He said: I went back to Suhayb and said, 'Mount and catch up with the Commander of the Faithful.' When 'Umar was stabbed, Suhayb entered weeping and saying, 'O my brother, O my companion!' 'Umar said, 'O Suhayb, do you weep over me, when the Messenger of God ﷺ said, "Indeed, the deceased is punished by the weeping of his family"?' Ibn 'Abbas said: When 'Umar died, I mentioned that to 'A'isha, and she said, 'May God have mercy on 'Umar. By God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not say that God punishes the believers by anyone's weeping, but he said, "Indeed, God increases the disbeliever in punishment by the weeping of his family over him."' She said: And 'A'isha said, 'Sufficient for you is the Quran: "No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."' He said: Ibn 'Abbas said at that, 'By God, He made [us] laugh and He made [us] weep.' Ibn Abi Mulayka said: By God, Ibn 'Umar did not say anything.
