Translation

✧ He was sitting with Ibn 'Umar one day in the market, and a funeral procession passed by with people weeping over it. Ibn 'Umar disapproved of that and rebuked them. Salama b. al-Azraq said to him, 'Do not say that, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, for I testify concerning Abu Hurayra: I heard him say: A woman from the clan of Marwan died, and I attended her funeral. Marwan ordered that the women who were weeping be struck. Abu Hurayra said, "Leave them, O Abu 'Abd al-Malik, for the Prophet ﷺ passed by a funeral procession with people weeping over it, and I was with him and 'Umar b. al-Khattab was with him. 'Umar rebuked the women who were weeping, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'Leave them, O Ibn al-Khattab, for the soul is afflicted and the eye is tearful, and the covenant is recent.'"' He said, 'Did you hear it?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'God and His Messenger know best.'
