What Has Been Related That The Prophet ﷺ Would Not Raise His Hands Except For The First Time

Show the chain

Notes

  • And in the narration from al-Barāʾ b ʿAzib, Abu ʿĪsá said that the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd is a Ḥasan, and with it, several knowledgeable individuals among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and the followers concur. This is the statement of Sufyān al-Thawrī and the people of Kūfah.

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: The hadith of Ibn Masʿūd is a good (ḥasan) hadith. More than one of the people of knowledge among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and the Followers hold this view. It is also the view of Sufyān al-Thawrī and the people of Kūfah.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Shafiʿī

    لم يثبت

machine translationIt is not established (lam yathbut).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • al-Tirmidhi

    حديث حسن

    machine translationA good (ḥasan) hadith.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Ibn al-Mubārak

حديث وكيع لا يصح والذي عندي أنه صحيح وإنما النكر فيه على وكيع زيادة ثم لا يعود وقالوا إنه كان يقولها من قبل نفسه وتارة لم يقلها وتارة أتبعها

machine translationThe hadith of Wakīʿ is not sound (ṣaḥīḥ), whereas in my view it is sound; what is objectionable (munkar) in it, attributed to Wakīʿ, is the addition "then he did not repeat it." They said that he used to say it of his own accord; at times he did not say it, and at times he added it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Dāraquṭnī

إنه حديث صحيح إلا هذه اللفظة يقصد لفظة لم يعد

machine translationIt is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith except for this phrase, meaning the phrase "he did not repeat."

  • Dāraquṭnī

    لم يثبت

machine translationIt is not established (lam yathbut).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • M. ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī

أضعف شيء يعول عليه لأن له عللا تبطله

machine translationIt is the weakest thing that can be relied upon, because it has defects (ʿilal) that invalidate it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Mubarakpūri

فثبت بهذا كله أن حديث ابن مسعود ليس بصحيح ولا بحسن بل هو ضعيف لا يقوم بمثله حجة

machine translationSo all of this establishes that the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd is neither sound (ṣaḥīḥ) nor good (ḥasan), but rather weak (ḍaʿīf); a proof cannot be established by the like of it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Ibn Ḥazm

    صححه

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Ibn al-Mubārak

    ضعفه

machine translationHe considered him weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Abū Daʾūd

ليس هو بصحيح على هذا اللفظ

machine translationIt is not sound (ṣaḥīḥ) with this wording.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

هذا خطأ يقال وهم فيه الثوري فقد رواه جماعة عن عاصم وقالوا كلهم إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم افتتح فرفع يديه ثم ركع فطبق وجعلهما بين ركبتيه ولم يقل أحد ما روى الثوري

machine translationThis is an error. It is said that al-Thawrī made a mistake in it, for a group narrated it from ʿĀṣim, and all of them said that the Prophet ﷺ began the prayer and raised his hands, then bowed, clasped his hands together and placed them between his knees. No one said what al-Thawrī narrated.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

    هذا حديث خطأ

machine translationThis hadith is an error.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • محمد بن وضاح القرطبي

الأحاديث التي تروى عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في رفع اليدين ثم لا يعود ضعيفة كلها

machine translationThe hadiths narrated from the Prophet ﷺ about raising the hands and then not repeating it are all weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Mubarakpūri

    هذا حديث ضعيف

machine translationThis hadith is weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 262
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

قال أبي هذا خطأ يقال وهم فيه الثوري وروى هذا الحديث عن عاصم جماعة فقالوا كلهم إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم افتتح فرفع يديه ثم ركع فطبق وجعلهما بين ركبتيه ولم يقل أحد ما رواه الثوري

machine translationMy father said: This is an error. It is said that al-Thawrī made a mistake in it.
