machine translationHannād narrated to us: Wakīʿ narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Abū Isḥāq, similarly. Abū ʿĪsā said: This is the statement of Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab and others. More than one narrator has related from al-Aswad, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ that he would perform ablution before sleeping. This is more authentic than the hadith of Abū Isḥāq from al-Aswad. Shuʿbah, al-Thawrī and more than one narrator have related this hadith from Abū Isḥāq. They consider this to be a mistake on the part of Abū Isḥāq.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThis is more authentic than the hadith of Abū Isḥāq: "The Prophet used to sleep in a state of janābah without touching water."

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationIt seems that both reports could be authentic (ṣaḥīḥ): the report of al-Aswad mentioning ablution before sleeping while in a state of janābah, and the hadith of Abū Isḥāq saying that he did not touch water, because ʿĀʾishah said: Sometimes he would bring the bathing forward and sometimes he would delay it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121

machine translationIt is an erroneous hadith (wahm), meaning the hadith of Abū Isḥāq; and in one report from him: it is not authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121

machine translationIt is not permissible to narrate it.

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121

machine translationThis hadith is anomalous (shādhdh).

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121

machine translationAbū Isḥāq made an error in this, meaning in his saying "he did not touch water."

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThey consider this to be a mistake on the part of Abū Isḥāq, meaning in his saying "he did not touch water."

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThe memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) criticized this wording, so the weakness (ḍaʿf) of the hadith is evident from what we have mentioned, meaning "he did not touch water."

    in جامع الترمذي, p. 121
  • Taḥāwī

machine translationThey said: This hadith is mistaken, because it is an abridged hadith that Abū Isḥāq abridged from a long hadith, and he erred in abridging it.
