حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي الْحَكَمُ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ

أَنَّ الصُّبَيَّ بْنَ مَعْبَدٍ كَانَ نَصْرَانِيًّا تَغْلِبِيًّا أَعْرَابِيًّا، فَأَسْلَمَ فَسَأَلَ: أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ ؟ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يُجَاهِدَ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَحَجَجْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ: لَا، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: حُجَّ وَاعْتَمِرْ ثُمَّ جَاهِدْ، فَانْطَلَقَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ بِالْحَوَائِطِ أَهَلَّ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا، فَرَآهُ زَيْدُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ وَسَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، فَقَالَا: لَهُوَ أَضَلُّ مِنْ جَمَلِهِ - أَوْ مَا هُوَ بِأَهْدَى مِنْ نَاقَتِهِ - فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى عُمَرَ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِقَوْلِهِمَا، فَقَالَ: هُدِيتَ لِسُنَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ

✧ Al-Subayy b. Ma'bad was a Christian Taghlibi bedouin who embraced Islam. He asked: 'Which deeds are best?' It was said to him: 'Jihad in the path of God.' He wanted to go on jihad, but it was said to him: 'Have you performed Hajj?' He said: 'No.' It was said: 'Perform Hajj and 'Umrah, then go on jihad.' He set out until he reached al-Hawa'it, where he entered ihram for both together. Zayd b. Suhan and Salman b. Rabi'a saw him and said: 'He is more astray than his camel'—or 'he is no more guided than his she-camel.' He went to 'Umar and told him what they said. 'Umar said: 'You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.'
