✧ The solitary narrations from 'Umar

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا خَارِجَةُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ

أَنَّهُ حَمَلَ عَلَى فَرَسٍ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَرَآهُ وَقَدْ أَضَاعَهُ صَاحِبُهُ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَبِيعَهُ، فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَنْ يَشْتَرِيَهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: لَا تَشْتَرِهِ وَإِنْ كَانَ بِدِرْهَمٍ، فَإِنَّ مَثَلَ الَّذِي يَعُودُ فِي صَدَقَتِهِ كَمَثَلِ الْكَلْبِ يَعُودُ فِي قَيْئِهِ

Translation

✧ He donated a horse in the path of Allah, then he saw that its owner had neglected it and wanted to sell it. He asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should buy it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not buy it, even if it were for a dirham. The example of the one who returns to his charity is like the dog that returns to its vomit."
